The #1 reason I don't do mainstream religion is....

Because I am too lazy to get up and go on Sunday...
J/K,
I think it's for people that don't have high enough IQ's and want to feel comfort from an idol. The worst part are the ones where you can go out and do something REALLY bad and then just pray and it's all supposed to be forgotten. No wonder so many people find religion in jail/prison.

Religion is for the feeble minded.

Mainstream religion? What is that?
Becoming religious in such a manner is more or less steriotyping yourself.. I say make your own religion, or belief! Everyone is different and noone can expect them to believe the same.. telling people what to believe only causes death and misery..
This is not to say one shouldnt communicate with others, but neither so because they are like-minded really, because one day you will change and then your view on this person.
Man, I really want to find the love of my life... You should think about that yourself, but reach a peace of mind first so you do not waste possible candidAtes.. good luck
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

mainstream religion is one which adheres to the orthodox standard teachings of the main religions of the world. This means that Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism (the five largest religions) are termed 'mainstream' religions provided that the adherents to these religions follow the accepted teachings of them.

Technically your supposed to truly repent your sins and beg forgiveness from your creator, but the churches have kinda made it into a "just ask, and you shall receive" kind of thing.

I have to disagree, I know some very intelligent people who also happen to be religious. I had this teacher back in the day who was an incredibly smart dude; he also happened to be a practicing christian.

Same here. Anti-intellectual, anti-science Christianity gets a lot of press especially in the US, but it's not the only thing going.

No mention of Taoism or pagans/neo-pagans? :c

Many people involved in the various civil rights movements are deeply religious and have deep roots in their religious communities. You'd be surprised to learn how many of the top scientists in the world are religiously observant.
Very hard to generalize about this stuff.
If there's one thing we humans are good at, it's "compartmentalizing."

No and yes. Plenty of highly intelligent people have a faith. But yes, they derive comfort from their beliefs.
I think people believe in religion because they can't handle the raw experience of a meaningless existence. When people face the absurd and try to find meaning in life they inevitably fail and some take the easy option of using a religion to explain it all. Comfortable and convenient.
Those irritating doubts which plague intelligent believers have to be suppressed by ever more fervent self-delusion. Thus some of the most intelligent devotees are also the most preachy. Through preaching they're not just trying to convince YOU that their religion is true, they're desperately trying to convince themselves. What they should really do is grow some balls and join me in facing the most offensive truth to the human psyche; that we exist without inherent purpose or meaning.

I don't know what you mean by "inherent purpose or meaning."
True, I have as much "inherent purpose or meaning" as a blade of grass does -- but the blade and I are not here by accident. The universe is not some incoherent and wildly out-of-control malevolent trickster.
There is order and purpose, everywhere and in everything.

You sure? That sounds like a fairly matter o' fact statement. The truth is nobody fucking knows what's going on so we should all just calm the fuck down.

No they seem to know that religion is for the feeble minded, when the people like the pope or the black pope even secretly run almost all the political governments thats why people like Obama and everyone of our presidents have to make the run up to the Vatican, for secret meetings AKA rituals just like at Skull and Bones and Bohemian Grove... Just saying... it's about what you do with a religion truthfully, the secret knowledge is hidden in these Secret Society religions, and it goes back to the Masonry of Ancient Egypt and Babylon.
The spirit is real, the soul is real, everything you despise and are afriad is real, the Illuminati is real, they really worship the devil... so on and so forth.

I would not know -- could not recognize -- order and purpose without the presence of disorder and chaos.

But that's not quite correct.
Nature permits life here in our small spot in the universe. It is a fact that all living things which are born, eventually die. Life seeds life, and Einstein's life work tells us that energy and matter are equivalent. Energy can't be created or destroyed within a closed system, as Newton had found. Our universe was born, scientists have estimated, at around 13.8 billion years ago, and I believe it is a 'living universe'. We are unable to observe or determine the nature of the living parent universe(s) which gave birth to our universe, or whether or not our universe is a closed or isolated system. The entropy of our universe is increasing. We are unable to determine the cause of the acceleration of expansion of our universe, but this expansion causes the maximum possible entropy of our universe to also rise.
Well, there are many facts, but from these I draw these.
The time prior to our birth was finite; our lives are finite; it is logical to extrapolate that the time beyond our individual lives will also be finite. We exist. Our purpose in nature is to live out our lives and roles as we see fit.

They have all left us non spiritual people, instead of all of being spiritual like people used to be, with plants, nature, Earth, the SKY the Heavens,
God's of many, but most of all religion keeps people righteous.
Without these religions we would be these soulless American's watching TV for 6 hours a day, eating Genetically Modified Organisms and listening to Katey Perry while texting on there cell phones, and anyone that brings up spirituality would make them angry, and curse like they are demons out of hell, living to be slaves on the TV FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE MOVIES
