Half Pint Jars with Straight Tyvek and Birdseed Question
    #1913292 - 09/13/03 04:33 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, I normally use quart jars, fill them halfway with birdseed, poke three 1/4 inch holes in the tops of the lids, put some tyvek in and incubate them with 1.5 ccs each at 83-5 degrees until they're colonized. My colonization times are pretty fucking slow and I'm an impatient guy. They've always been slow for me, 6 - 7 weeks. 5 if I'm really really lucky.

I wanted to modify how I colonize and I want your input.

I was thinking of downsizing back to the half pint jar. Fill the jar 3/4 of the way up so it can be shook a little. I was going to use birdseed and apply 1cc per jar and do about 12 jars total. I am not going to use the metal lids but just use the metal rings combined with a straight tyvek layer, that way I am getting maximum air exchange. (i believe this is why my jars always seem to go so slow once they hit that 3 week stage of growth)

So once again, that is 1/2 pint jars filled 3/4 with birdseed that will be soaked for 24 hours and PCed for 45 minutes total at 15 psi. No metal tops, just tyvek with 1cc of spore solution.

Do you think by having a smaller surface area the fungi will colonize quicker?

let me know what you all think before I go an waste my time

thanks

I remember a pic were anno had tyvek side by side with poly

and the tyvek jars had a slight problem with NOT growing all the way BECAUSE of the air

You should have no more than 1 square inch or less of tyvec exposed.

Just tape over most of it or they will get so much air exchange that they will dry out.

make some liquid mycelium....karo tek etc (i use dextrose).
your jars will colonise much faster.

I have been using 1 pint jars w/birdseed (millet, milo, wheat, sunflower seed, crushed corn and a litlle kelp meal.) in an incubator I made for $25 US. I drilled 1 quarter inch hole in the center, PC'd for 90 mins. and then innoculated w/syringe and stuffed cotton in the hole. I have only had 1 jar contaminate and they collonize in 3 weeks from spores (B+ strain, a fast little collonixer, too). Since you said that you filled your quart jars halfway w/seed, it makes me think you know what you're doing there as far as shaking/aeration. Hanky's suggestion of liquid mycelium would be beneficial; or a grain transfer. Other than that all I can say is "Have you tried an incubator, lately?"

Happy cultivating

incubators are great. made mine for around 25 bucks as well. I am gonna let these quart jars ride their way out. Meanwhile I have 1 syringe left in my fridge and I am going to try to liquid myclium technique with 1/2 pint jars and see how quick this goes. I'll post my results in a week.
