All because a bunch of dudes couldn't get it up. And people thought it cured cancer.
How are people so enthralled with Death (see: violent culture, gore movies, etc), yet when their time comes, they grasp at straws and lose all dignity?

I remember back in the 90s all the environmentalists were raving about endangered species. For the last 10 years all I've heard from them is carbon this and carbon that. I guess they went where the money was?

I know that they tried sequestering rhinos, but poachers would cross the fences and kill them anyway. I think, unfortunately, in comparison to one species, the threat of all life as we know it being under threat is more pertinent.
I am killing it with the $2 words today.

This is the result of our culture in general. Let's not get nit picky about specifics. We promote the extinction of animals daily with our materialistic lifestyles. This means you and me.

Why not get picky about specifics? Specifics are what is most important.
At first thought, I think that at least I have a opulent and luxurious lifestyle gained by extinctions you describe. The black rhino horn does not have medicinal value. Its extinction did not promote a opulent or luxurious lifestyle. It merely satisfied a stupid and baseless religious style belief.

But less proven. We know for a fact animals go extinct due to human activities. All the carbon credits in the world won't change that. I liked environmentalists better when what they stood for was cut a dry and the donations didn't end up in the hands of a government agency.

If you were one of the ladies the black rhino horn helped to a more fulfilled initimate life I bet you'd giggle instead.
You've got to realize that viagra isn't in places they don't have pharmacies and even if they had them it might cost too much for a doctor's appointment so the women have to send the men out to get their meds by poaching. Its really a health care crisis more than anything to do with endangered species. I blame the women that told the men they weren't being properly pleased.

Bullshit. You are just making things up. The placebo effect does not cure or treat anything, it only affects how the person feels. You may feel better from a placebo, but the cancer, infection, broken bone, etc. lingers on.

Then you are just equivocating in lieu of formulating a coherent thought and opinion.
Most medicine is not a placebo. Most of it has active ingredients. The amount of medicine at the pharmacy which is placebo is virtually zero. Only in the over-the-counter racks under the label of "homeopathic" will you find placebos.

Let's see your evidence for this cause hey, I know you're wrong.
But actually I never said I was talking about if pharmaceuticals are placebo. That's a conclusion you jumped to. What I was talking about was that there is often placebo effect in how people react to medicines of all kinds. Having worked in the health care field I've had several conversations with medical doctors about the placebo effect and they acknowledged that many patients experience it to some degree or another.
Placebos are widely used in medical research and medicine,[5] and the placebo effect is a pervasive phenomenon;[5] in fact, it is part of the response to any active medical intervention.[6] Archie Cochrane suggested in 1972[7] "It is important to distinguish the very respectable, conscious use of placebos. The effect of placebos has been shown by randomized controlled trials to be very large. Their use in the correct place is to be encouraged […]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo

Yes I was and you have not substantiated your claims. I'm waiting.
And it wasn't an accusation. Maybe you should have considered the whole discussion at hand.
I'm waiting.
The placebo effect has been controversial throughout history. Notable medical organizations have endorsed it,[24] but in 1903 Richard Cabot concluded that it should be avoided because it is deceptive. Newman points out the "placebo paradox", – it may be unethical to use a placebo, but also unethical "not to use something that heals". He suggests to solve this dilemma by appropriating the meaning response in medicine, that is make use of the placebo effect, as long as the "one administering… is honest, open, and believes in its potential healing power".[8] Another possible resolution of the ethical dilemma might come from the "honest placebo" effect found in a 2010 study[4] carried out by researchers in the Program in Placebo Studies at the Harvard Medical School, where patients with irritable bowel syndrome experienced a significant beneficial effect even though they were told the pills they were taking were placebos, as compared to a control group who received no pills.
A study of Danish general practitioners found that 48% had prescribed a placebo at least 10 times in the past year.
and here's an interesting ditty to chew on. http://www.wired.com/medtech/drugs/magazine/17-09/ff_placebo_effect?currentPage=all

well, I looked it up and apparently rhino horn giving you boners is a myth. It's one of the the few things in traditional Chinese medicine not used as an aphrodisiac.
I found this: http://www.cites.org/eng/com/sc/62/E62-47-02-A.pdf looks like rhino horn does have some medicinal value for things like treating fever. However, western medicine does preform better, though it's still interesting that it does something.

beforeIgetold said: They are not extinct..... The news.is bunk. Check out Huffington post. There are actually 4000 still alive and being relocated to help breeding. So stay happy but vigilant...
One variety of black rhino is now extinct. 2000 years ago there were 3 kinds of elephant, the African elephant, the Indian elephant, and the Pygmy elephant. Today two species are left. While all varieties of Elephants are not totally extinct, the pygmy elephant is totally extinct, as now apparantly the western black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis longipes) is as well. I hope this clarifies it for you. Excerpt from the article OP referenced...
Oh what a difference a century makes. At the beginning of the 20th century, an estimated one million black rhinoceroses from four different subspecies roamed the savannas of Africa. By 2001 that number had dropped to about 2,300 black rhinos and just three subspecies. This is the tale of how we lost one of those subspecies, the western black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis longipes). It is a story of greed, indifference, hope and despair.
