Deer hunting with just a knife.

Has anyone ever Harvested a deer from the woods with just a knife?
Hunting deer with modern weapons like compound bow's and shotguns is a new thing. For hundreds of thousands of years we survived just fine with simplistic weapons. I was wondering If anyone had any information on deer hunting tips and techniques using just a simple knife and dispatching the deer by hand.
I would think there would be two easy ways to try it. You either jump on its back from a tree or you could cover yourself in leaves and ambush it from the ground. If you could get close enough to grab it a clean stab to the neck would bleed the animal out quickly.
Before you animal activists jump down my ass ask your self what is more sporting and fair then to actually hunt down and harvest meat for your dinner with your bare hands.
Advice Anyone, links, stories, videos to help me out?

I think this would be very difficult, even with your scenarios. Deer are very quick! If you made a slight sound in a tree the deer would hear you and run like the dickens, if you were covered in leaves and made a slight noise they would probably run and get away too. Also on the ground you face a serious chance of getting kicked, which would not be good, but I think the ground method would be the most likely scenario to be successful.
With that being said, trying to stab it with a knife would really be impractical. I'm pretty sure a normal bow, throwing knives, or even maybe dropping/throwing a large rock would go a long way.

Could always use a spear from a tree like Jared Allen

Even cooler would be jumping down onto the animal from the tree. Flop!

Watched a buddy kill one with a thrown tomahawk. He practices everday and does tomahawk throwing competitions. He said it was skill but I still believe it was just dumb ass luck. He did it from a tree stand at around 20 feet. Hit the damn thing in the neck and it still ran 1/4 mile before dying. I have finished off many with a knife and even slitting thier throat they still fight for a few minutes. This past muzzle loader I beat one to death with a stick and it was still a bit iffy of danger. I ended up shooting the deer in the spine so its back legs were paralyzed and damn thing wouldn't let me get close enough to cut it so I picked up a stick and swung away. Getting close enough is the main problem. U might be able to jump from a tree stand with a spear if u baited right under u. Good luck if you try it on a buck. Those racks aren't just for show and people have been killed by them.

I agree it is not going to be easy, but that is the reason i am interested in trying it. I would assume not many people have ever killed a deer by hand in this day and age, I like a challenge. And if the deer gets a good kick in then that is only fair also, the danger of attempting it is also part of the challenge.
I have personally been within reach of deer while hiking and camping in the woods, they have also been under the tree stand and have had no idea a human is above them. The area where I hunt normally the deer populations are big and the same trails get used frequently so the odds are improved that i could get close enough for a hit. It only takes an hour or two to hunt a deer with normal weapons around here, sitting in the woods for a few hours is not a problem.
I believe the knife is the tool to use. A rock would not be a sure kill and would be really inhumane if i missed and just broke a bone or something where the animal got away but suffered. A stab with a decent size knife would ensure it bleed out quickly. A bow even a homemade one has been done and I don't see a challenge in it.
thanks for your reply..

I don't think I would try it with a big buck, That rack would stab the shit out you if he dug in the right place, I don't mind some buses from this but I am not trying to die. imagine a huge 10 pointer getting his rack stuck in your jacket as he starts freaking out and flailing away, Ouch...
I think I would go for the stab then try to stay away while it bleed out. I am not practiced in throwing shit so that is out of the question. But the tomahawk story is bad ass.

Dude thanks for the video, It got me all pumped up... fuck yeah. now that is what i am talking about!! A homemade spear might be a safe way to do it and would still be extremely hard.
but jumping on its back and Rambo'n it to the ground would even be better, I gotta find a way to film this shit when i try it. maybe just mount a camera a tree across from me and let it tape. I dont have a GoPro or anything like that, but this needs to be filmed

good luck trying to catch a goddamned deer...
Yes, people used to kill deer with knives but they also used to capture them first using a snare or some other trap.
I come from a long line of hunters and the thought of someone descending from the trees upon a deer is absolutely hilarious.

they don't look that elusive or tough to me, this little ass deer cant even beat up this poor fat kid..
this Australian grabs one way bigger then i would try with just some shorts on..
I cant see how this would be that mind blowing hard.

killing a deer this way wont be easy in the slightest so size does not matter and the more I think about it I dont think i would try to grab a buck with antlers at all. That is just asking for trouble.
I am looking for a challenge more then anything and just for myself for the most part. I am not that big on bragging and unless you get video of something like this most people will just roll there eyes and not believe you anyway.
check out the rest of his videos, he catches everything with his bare hands. he is one crazy Australian!!!

Indeed, it is damn near impossible to catch and kill a deer with only a melee weapon. I suggest you look into trapping.
I used to throw knives at deer when I was a kid but it's pretty damn hard to hit them, and even if you do it will be a nonlethal shot.
Contrary to your OP, I don't think that humans ever killed large game without traps before they had developed things like the bow and arrow and throwing spears.

Tom Brown did that in one of his Tracker books. He scouted out the habits of a couple deer and found out they always walked through this one grove. Then he picked a tree and waited in it for several hours until they came by and he dropped on one of them and cut it's throat.
Or so he says.

hell yeah I am going to eat it. Already have the tenderloins marinading for tomorrow night.
90% of my meat comes from Fishing and hunting during the year. I hope to get another one this week with the gun and then once some snow gets on the ground I will try to get a small one with the knife.
That should fill the freezer up nicely...

Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking? It's not even deer season here yet on the east coast. Do you have tags for multiple deer or are you just allowed to take as many from your property as you want?

Run them down first, like a Bushman.
Probably not a practical solution to your quest, but it's an awesome video IMO.

I live in CT, deer hunting on state land with shotgun started Nov 20th and goes till Dec 10th. I shot him in the state forest behind my house and this deer was legal and i tagged him.
That one is about as big as they come for around these parts.
