Hearing voices.

The Psychological disturbances thread got me thinking about my experience of hearing voices every once in a while. I have always been curious how many other people actual hear voices in their head now and again. Here is a repost of what I said in that other thread about it:
Schizophrenia runs in my family, and sometimes late at night when the world is quiet, I hear what sound like far off voices mumbling/whispering things I cannot understand. Sometimes I think I hear them say my name. And every once in a while, when I am on the verge of falling asleep, right as my brain starts to fade out, I get startled back to full awareness by a high pitched angry, echoing scream in my right ear. The screaming voice is male, but it never says anything. Just screams.
Anyone else ever experience anything like it? It used to freak me out, but I have been dealing with it since I was about 16, and it has never gotten any worse... yet.

Thanks for that. Anyone else have anything of substance to say? Not that I can argue with volcomstoner... he is always right, after all.

Only after inhalingcrack, but I don't do that anymore. Sometimes I hear my name in noisy places. I tend to hear more in noisy places, in silence I just have a high pitched ring or hiss.

Haha, don't get all sensitive man, its the shroomery, those kinda answers should be expected.
I can't say I have ever had anything like that occur, schizo does not run in my family. The only mental disorder, if ya wanna call that, that runs in my family is pretty serious anxiety. I have at times convinced myself that I'm hearing noises but in reality I'm not really hearing anything at all. It sounds like what your experiencing is a bit different. When your hear those voices, are you in a perfectly normal mind state. As in your just laying there chilling and then all of a sudden you hear noises? I've read up on schizo before and it sounds much more involved than what your describing. As in people with actual schizo try to communicate with the voices and believe they are real and may be trying to hurt them. Might wanna see a doc altho I guess if your used to it and its not negatively effecting you, no worries Hope I could be of some help

Yeah, except for the screaming man who only happens in the specific situation I described (almost about to drop off to sleep), the mumbling/whispering voices and people saying my name can happen at any time... any time it is quiet and my mind is not occupied.

had three distinct personalities in my "mind" other than my own, each would influence the hallucinations in their own way when it was their time to take the wheel. they could converse with each other. one would produce very dark and nasty visions, one was very positive and happy, and the other was kind of in between.
in certain moods i will hear people talking but it is too quiet to make out what exactly they are saying. sounds like a TV in another room.

Sometimes I hear faint speaking, as if a talk radio station were on despite my radio being off, and sometimes there are many different voices conversing, like how it'd sound if people were talking about something a few rooms away from you. At times they're more muffled, and other times more clear, and from time to time I can catch what seem to be random phrases, words and ideas, but following the full conversation is like impossible. I am certain of not experiencing anything like this prior to around age 13, which was my first year of high school.
Over the past three years I've visited a few different mental health professionals out of curiosity, and they mostly mentioned things that lined up with my own feelings about it & findings from my own research, and they make sense to me. Like how it's not diagnosable as a mental illness since it doesn't cause me any problems; doesn't need to be treated with medication due to not being a mental illness; the voices aren't telling me to do things so I shouldn't worry; non-malicious voice hearing seems to be somewhat common http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/help-information/mental-health-a-z/H/hearing-voices/); ; it's not schizophrenia because I am grounded in reality as opposed to being grounded to some irrational grand delusion; and, the inner/mental voice of some people isn't a monologue (due to being made up of more than a single, 'main' voice, and such. Although I'm not sure how much that last one really applies to me.
Anyways, hope this helps & hopefully I'm not just stating the obvious here.

Yep, exactly. At least I am not the only one. I don't have distinct personalities in my head though, not that I can identify anyway.

I wonder if maybe they aren't the workings of subconscious, or maybe a sensitivity to the signalling and messaging that goes on between our cells.

Huh, strange, I remember reading something about how you enter this strange mental state right before goin to sleep, I think its called hypnagogia, I would suggest doin some research, people have been known to experience auditory and visual hallucinations I believe. Have you ever experienced any delusional thoughts? Just completely irrational

Sometimes I like to make believe I am a good person deep down when I know it not to be the case. Does that count?
Anyway, I know what you are asking, and I don't think so.

Sometimes when there is random noise going on in the background your brain can't quite make out any one sound. So it begins to infer and fill in what the sounds are and you begin hearing things that aren't there. Any white noise can cause this effect. I have heard whispering in waterfalls, full multiperson conversations and music in fans. More recently I have several air pumps bubbling away that like to say my name at 3 in the morning.
Psychoactive drugs, especially cannabis can increase this phenomenon. Usually when you hear a voice its because of this, however a voice speaking clearly and directly to you would be cause for concern.
Edit* After rereading your post, the screaming male voice sounds similar to Exploding head syndrome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome

Hey that's cool. Never heard voices sober before. Sounds like it happens when you're relaxed. You should explore it. Could be gnomes or aliens. No but seriously if I were you i'd get on that. Try to talk back. Ask why they screamin so loud. Chances are these voices are going on a lot (maybe all the time) and you just only notice when you're deeply relaxed.

If you want serious answers you should have posted this in the Physical and Mental Well-Being forum.
The Pub is not the place to get serious answers that you want, without having annoying kids troll you.
And never open up to junkies about this stuff.

Well the only reason I read this was because it's in the pub. And honestly I think my advice is better than some overused mental evaluation. Possibly going crazy? Explore it, come back, tell us all about it.
