monotub help/poll
    #19133392 - 11/13/13 09:03 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I have been using damions 50/50 tek for my monotubs and found that step 12 (Now take that left over coir that was in the bucket and use it to put a top cover layer over the entire surface so that there are no exposed grains.) is very counter productive. Doing this always make full colonization take extremely long. Some say that doing step 12 will help prevent contams but I have found the opposite. What do you guys think? Do you cover your grains or just mix throughly with your sub?

I just made six monos

I did a few with the top layer of sub,
and some without.

I did only a little to cover though, not a 1/4 or anything.

Me and many other cultivators on here have also found the top layer of substrate to be counter productive. A few exposed grains never hurt my tubs but putting a top layer of substrate seems to vastly increase colonization times leading to problems

^^^This.
IME the faster my tubs colonize, the more flushes I seem to be able to squeeze outta them in the long run. I usually go for 4 minimum but have had 7 flush wonders before. I usually aim to get the spawn run done in 6 days or less. Best spawn run was 4 days.

I agree.  Top layer is not necessary at all, and from what I have found in the past month it is detrimental if anything.

Back 5 years or so ago, I either misunderstood the process, or it was common knowledge to "case" your grain with a 50/50 mix to prevent contamination. I recently learned that this is worthless and slows down the tub speeds. Apparently I missed the part about mixing your grains and 50/50.... Oh well lesson learned.

There is no 50/50 mix.  Damien5050 should be forced to change his username.  It's almost like he made it that way in hopes that it would confuse 97% of people that use his tek..

i concur, i find that the pseudo layer of extra coir dries out and doesnt colonize to 100%.

also you should try out proper pasteurization, i used to use the bucket tek then thing went south quickly.

my :twocents:
