Just like the dying French language
    #19132536 - 11/13/13 06:28 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

requires legislation to keep it relevant in the world the Republicants now rely on Gerrymandering, the Filibuster, and Disenfranchising Vote to keep themselves relevant in US politics.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/how-republicans-rig-the-game-20131111

"The good news is that the future is more powerful than Republican dirty tricks. The GOP may have postponed its day of reckoning at the hands of a younger, browner, queerer electorate – "They're holding back the tides," says Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics – but sooner or later, they're going to get swamped."

So build your dikes ever higher because the oncoming Dem tide is rising, the higher you build them the farther they fall, and the more spectacular the flood.

Obviously not you two.

The difference with this gerrymandering is they used a computer program to maximize the pubs and minimize the dems.

The tide is coming, seek higher ground.

That's what gerrymandering is, dude...whether they use a computer, the goal is to keep all of the other party voters in the least amount of districts while spreading one's own party's voters to more districts with just enough votes to win all of those districts.

Those in power get to draw district lines, so they always draw them to benefit themselves.

Rolling Stone has great journalism and frankly if you're not reading Taibbi I can 99.9% guarantee you don't know about the massive fraud going on in our financial markets with LIBOR, ISDAfix, the Brent Benchmark, etc. They're fixing LIBOR, the interest rate swaps, the price of energy, and the foreign currency market...and that's just what we know of. That isn't even talking about the manipulation of the commodities market via the GSCI and (until recently) clandestine removal of position limits by the CFTC.

Laughing at RollingStone? The joke is on you.

For the record many blue states like California and Washington have legitimately independent commissions draw lines so as to not abuse the power of gerrymandering.  On the other hand Republicans are abusing the power to the theoretical maximum. One side is interested in playing fair. You can rationalize your dirty tactics with "the other guy does it too" but it just ain't true.

I don't see that it matters either way.  The vast majority of seats will go to either a democrat or a republican.

Rolling Stone puts out quality pieces with a high integrity quite often.  Just because they don't coincide with your views doesn't mean they're wrong or full of shit.

Hate to break it to you, but your conservative fantasy-land doesn't exist anywhere outside of your own head.

Do you mean Democrats and Republicans?  Because if you're going to try to argue that liberals and conservatives are the same thing, I'm not entirely sure you know how the political spectrum works.

I know how it works.  In practical terms, however, people fall in a very narrow range in the center of the spectrum, and only use the terms liberal and conservative relatively.  Very few actual conservatives exist and even fewer true liberals.

I'm a mutualist and amused when libertarians try to pretend they're above left and right. You're not objective or some thoughtful synthesis of both sides. You're non-authoritarian conservatives in your pure form but in the majority of cases still tainted. Deal with it.

I forgot how to post pics.  The deficit decreasing is of no use.  Any deficit increases the debt.

Mush4  are you really not aware of special privileges for supposed journalists?  If you as a regular citizen observe or receive information regarding a crime or an incipient crime or a crime that has already happened you can be compelled at the penalty of contempt to reveal what you know and how you know it and who told you.  Journalists are largely protected from this.  Occasionally they go to jail but almost always they do not have to reveal sources.  You and me?  We got to jail every time.

You are aware that eliminating the deficit is in no way desirable, right? Anyone with even an iota of economics education would tell you we want the debt sitting just around 40-60% of GDP. All that is required for that to happen is for growth of GDP to outpace the growth of debt. A surplus is not just unnecessary but borderline stupid.

Funny that you think Taibbi is a communist. Chomsky is a communist, who the hell knows what Taibbi is? He's a Glenn Greenwald type.

This is one of the most stunningly ignorant things I have ever seen anyone post on this site.  We do not want the debt of the federal government to exist at all.  You are confusing two different kinds of debt.  I think.  I hope.

========+========

And the reason we don't want this debt is...what, exactly? Your understanding of public financing probably comes from your understanding of your own personal finances, not from formal education. The "get rid of all the debt" position is the most facile position possible. You don't arrive at a counterintuitive position like the one I just laid out by being ignorant. Paying down the debt completely would entail a massive loss of GDP in both the short and long run. As long as deficit spending doesn't raise real interest rates (see: the crowding out effect) deficit spending contributes to real GDP by stimulating investment that would otherwise not have occurred. We don't live in a closed economy and quite often our borrowing comes from other countries, giving us access to resources we are able to invest at a higher ROI than we borrowed it  at. Do yourself a favor and do the research before you call someone "stunningly ignorant". You may want to keep in mind that I get paid to teach economics, so watch yourself before you assume I'm the ignorant one.

It never ends.  You should give your check back since you don't seem to be able to understand the difference between debt and deficit.  There is no reason whatsoever for the largest financial entity in the history of human history to ever have to borrow money.  It should be lending money.  Now you can make an argument that the spread is everything and I could appreciate that it is better to borrow at a lower rate than you can lend but there is no lending going on.  Government lending bodies somehow manage to lose money on their investments.  What resources are we tapping with our deficit spending that are giving us a better ROI?  I'll tell you one thing I am absolutely sure is a shit ROI.  Higher education as it is currently practiced.

Nothing in my post indicates that I don't understand the difference between deficit and debt, something I accused you of a few days ago. What do we get a better ROI on than the interest payment? Pretty much anything; there's negative real interest rates on treasury notes right now you fool.

In any event, this conversation is kind of like "You think 0.99999...=1? That's the most stunningly ignorant thing I've ever heard. Damn math teachers don't understand math at all lollolol!"
