My friend spotted these and I'd like to get an idea as to what they are before I go out and pick them and get a proper ID. Can anyone help ? These are growing right now in Los Angeles

Cinnamon to rusty colored gills together with the prominent annulus are features suggestive of Pholiotina sp. Be sure to present good gill shots when posting id requests. The annulus will sometimes be gone due to rain or other disturbances so as to make an exact id more difficult.
I don't believe you'll have much luck finding Psilocybe cyanescens in Southern California anyway, tbh.

Probably not, but they have turned up there.
As aside point, there are also toxic, rusty gilled mushrooms superficially resembling Psilocybe which don't have a prominent annulus. This is extra reason to support this suggestion, and the observation of the whole musroom.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
