Aliens won't talk to us because our greatest break through was light up sneakers.

Also, since we are on the subject of humanity, OP, what are your plans to  detach yourself from your ancestral disease? I think of this a lot. What are we really going to do to change it? Is there anything people can do? Anything a person can do? Like the Matrix, Neo was the one right? But later on you learn that there is no prophecy, but is there still hope because that thought is there?

We belong to the world.
We belong to the community of life on this planet-
It doesn't belong to us.
We got confused about that, now it's time to set the record straight.

This thought popped into my head yesterday, actually - humans as a virus, as in The Matrix.

I was thinking of it from the perspective of the Earth basically being an organism, perhaps with a kind of consciousness (like that 'Gaia' idea). Whether this is the case or not, if you imagine the Earth as an organism, and as host to all of the life on the planet - in a kind of co-dependent relationship, like the human body 'hosting' bacteria - and you look at the activity and impact of humans.. it's quite clear we're doing a lot of damage to the host (Earth) and other supportive 'bacteria', with the hot-spots/centres of damage being major cities. We're like the tenants from hell and the Earth must want to rid itself of us.

We're a pretty tricky virus though. If the Earth (as an organism) had an immune system, or a system to regulate the life within it, which resembled ours in the way it identified 'harmful' bacteria, we'd be very hard to pick, I think. We have great potential and much of humanity is pretty good and worth keeping around, but much (perhaps most) of humanity is also selfish, greedy and has no regard for its surrounding -  and the fact that we have nuclear power makes these people a critical threat. How would the Earth manage a virus like this?

Methods such as natural disasters (tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes etc.) are quite inaccurate, as is temperature regulation (global warming?), but slow us down nonetheless. Viruses which target malevolent humans are probably difficult to code. I think genuine spirituality has the potential to transform us from a harmful virus to a value-adding, health-promoting symbiont - but that's easily corrupted, I suppose. Religion is obviously fail, I would say. Besides our instincts, which don't seem to be cutting it, psychedelics and time spent in nature pretty much seem the best method out there to rectify our status as a virus, IMO.

In reality, it seems we've pretty much taken over our host though and are now in the process of destroying it and emigrating elsewhere. Unless, of course, there's an uprising of Skynet and intelligent machines largely eradicate and displace humanity. Either way, I think machines and digitisation of reality will play a major part in our future. As transhumanists, would we still carry the nature of a virus?

I'd rather be an intelligent being fucking up my environment until it can no longer sustain my life than to be an unintelligent, respectful creature.

Seems a contradiction.

False. The other animal known to kill for pleasure is the polar bear. Polar bears are known to sometimes track their prey for 400+ miles just for the joy of killing it, and then not eat it or anything, just kill it for pleasure then go on its way.

Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
Humans are mammals. Humans have boobs, which are also known as mammary glands. All mammals have mammary glands, that's what they're freakin named mammals for. Post is invalid.
