Interesting long stipe at 4800 ft.

Habitat: Terrestrial. Clustered, growing from common base. Base extremely deep in the ground.
Gills: Attached, notched. Whitish, discoloring reddish brown.
Stem: The knife in the picture is 14cm long, so the stipe was probably close to 30cm. The first collection had two visible fruits above ground, with another two aborts below ground. Second group had multiple fruits above ground (I didn't collect). However, yellow staining can be seen on both.
Cap: See photos
Spore print color: White.
Bruising: Not sure about bruising. Definitely stained yellow on stipe, and reddish brown on both stipe and gills.
Other information: Habitat old grown white fir and Shasta Red Fir.
The only thing I can think of is Xerula.

The yellow staining stalk, white spores and clustered growth are characteristics that fit with Armillaria, but I just don't think these could be honey's. The bottom edge of the cap was about 3cm above the forest duff, but the base of the stipe was super deep, 25cm or more.
They also seemed a bit more flexible than Armillaria. I was able to "roll" up the stalk to fit in my ziploc storage container.
While I've been seeing Armillaria everywhere this season, this is at almost 5000 ft and I haven't seen a one up that high this year.

Looking at this mushroom again (and not from my phone) I'm less inclined to think Lyophyllum. The scaly/striate stipe for one, does not fit well in that genus. I hope someone knows what they are.

The pins remind me of a Gomphidius, but the gill attachment on the mature ones is way off.

I have an unbelievably bad photo of the top of the caps, that I originally didn't want to post out of embarassment (just got a new camera and tripod, and forgot the damned tripod).
But since you guys are cool enough to help me out, I'll swallow my pride.

I have no clue what genera they belong to. Cool find, and good eyes! Maybe try posting them to mushroomobserver.org if you run out of guess on this site.

I will, Maynard. When I found these, the only thing I could think of was Xerula, due to the spore color and deeply rooted stipe.
The habitat is awesome. Huge, old growth trees. Picked a few matsutake on this hunt.

Hmmmm. That is interesting. The first line on Kuo's page says
"Formerly known as Collybia maculata, this small to medium-sized mushroom is recognized by its whitish cap, which develops cinnamon spots and stains as it matures;"
I can't seem to find any pictures matching these ones either.
How did you determine that Alan?

The gills are not super mature and do not have spots yet, but the stem is covered in brown stains.

Im not convinced. The stem also has yellow stains.
Check out the really young fruits. They are very dark and that does not seem to be bruising.
Also, the cap would develop the spots from a white cap.
Check it

The stipe on my collection is close to 30cm long. Rhodocollybia maculata, at least according to Mushroom Expert is up to 15cm.
Also, the photo of the younger cluster shows the same yellow staining as on the stipe of the one I collected, but this isn't mentioned in the description for R. maculata.
Are you pretty confident about this one, Alan?

The cap seems too dark for R. maculata. The serrated gills do point in that direction though.
Lyophyllum is also possible.

I'm going with Armillaria as well. The stains on the stipe look yellow to me and that is typical for a lot of Armillaria that I find.

Here are a couple of shots I took a few minutes ago. The mushroom has been sitting exposed to air since 6pm yesterday, so 24 hours.
Alan: I need to read up on Lyophyllum. I'm only familiar with L. decastes. Is the incredibly long stipe consistent with Lyophyllum?
Lhun: I'm a pretty frustrated mushroom hunter from Dec to May, but during the rest of the year I'm pretty excited about the unusual fungi in my area.
Pic 1 is color balanced way too yellow, so that I could show the detail on the cap and put Armillaria away on this one.

Could still be a different species of Lyophyllum. It might be what Dimitar calls Sierra Crazy Lyophyllum
