symbolism - the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
i find the impact that symbolism has on most people interesting. for example we all know what an impact the Swastika has. but what about the Sickle & Hammer ? it is the opinion of many that soviet communism has killed just as many innocents if not more than the Nazi's. so why does a Sickle & Hammer seem more socially acceptable than a Swastika ? they even look very similar.
how does this symbol make you feel ?

It's supposed to represent the disenfranchised, the factory worker and the peasant, right? So I certainly see that aspect, but it's been overused by dictators and marketers and brand experts to the point that it first became a symbol of oppression and then completely meaningless.
Simple symbols like this are very powerful though, and they always use dramatic clashing colours, red, white, yellow. It's something simple and symbolic that people can rally behind, so I can see why it's been used the way it has.

Doesn't make me feel anything really.. Neither does a Swastika for that matter.

i find the impact that they have on people fascinating. whether its a good symbol that invokes peace, or an infamous symbol that invokes hate. i just find the impact of symbols on the psychology of people interesting. its very strategic and it works on masses of people

If you look at it just as what it is: a symbol of "power to the people" and what not, then it's not really that bad. However, like the Swastika, it has some pretty bad connotations to it, which is generally what most people (including myself) think of when they see it.

thank you for the input...
a little background as to what sparked this topic. i know this girl from russia and she is very loud & proud. she is obsessed with the USSR/CCCP she has flags and banners with the Sickle & Hammer and its next to impossible to talk to her about anything else and if you do manage to it always comes back to Soviet Russia somehow. her entire family is like this. i dont care either way im just curious how it makes other people feel. most people ive asked seem fine with it but i think it would be different if she was from Germany and Preaching Swastika.
maybe its just a russian thing ? i dont know many russians to know if most of them are for or against the Soviet Union as it was so i cant compare

If you're interested in symbols you should read 'Man and His Symbols' by Carl Jung or anything by Joseph Campbell.

There was a short piece on the radio relating to this recently. They were talking to different people about their regrets in life, and this one lady was talking about how when she was a teenager or so she had worn a shirt with a hammer and sickle around her Ukrainian grandmother. She knew that the grandmother had lived through communism but hadn't put any thought into how the symbol would upset her. Basically the grandmother just got upset and pointed at the symbol and told her she didn't like it, but it was something the woman remembered strongly as something that she wished she hadn't done.

It makes me feel happy and secure.
To me..
The star means my gov't is always there watching out for me.
The hammer and sickle mean they are willing to fight to protect me.

communist symbol: well the star signifies an idealism, a striving towards the future, and the hammer and sickle represent an embrace of industrial society, the common man as an essential part of the machine. it's also inherently militaristic.
swastika: well it almost looks like a spiral so its sort of hypnotic, to me it symbolizes forward progress and perfection. but remember the nazis weren't the first to use it, the swastika is often times a symbol of peace but they kind of took it and ran with it.

It doesn't make me feel anything except for a longing of a simpler time. Ah High school, going to the arcade and playing some Street Fighter 2 at the local pizza joint.
