Have any of you ridden amtrak across the USA/Canada border? How was the trip? Is amtrak an enjoyable ride or is it worth paying more and taking a plane?
Did they search you?

I fucking HATE Amtrak. That shit is never on time. Always takes longer than advertised. Fairly expensive, and has shit accommodations.
However, this may simply be based on the lines I'm used to taking.

It's run by the government. How good could it be? I swear, if the government was put in charge of the Mojave Desert there would be a shortage of sand within three years.

Greyhound and Megabus suffer from delays and generally poor service too.

I took a train from Toronto to DC once. Trains are a great way to travel IMO, you can walk around, get a beer, whatever. I wasn't of drinking age for that trip but I was for other domestic trips since and it's fun hanging out on the restaurant car and drinking beer and maybe watching a movie if they have a tv set up. The food is shit of course, but what can you do.

I've never crossed the border, but taken Amtrak domestically a few times. Every time it's been AWESOME. Pretty big, cushy seats, outlets, wi-fi etc. I always think: Man, this is WAY the fuck better than flying.

Is there something special about Amtrak? I've crossed the USA Canada border 50-100 times by car and never been searched. Not once.

Perhaps you won't be, but I've been searched on trains enough not to risk a border crossing.
As far as accommodations Amtrak is alright, rather take a plane for long flights but its good if you're bringing an instrument in tow or something else large/fragile.

Your method of travel plays a lot into what kind of person they decide you are I think. Someone who travels by bus or in a shitty looking car is seen as more likely to be up to no good.

I've taken the ride between Vancouver and SF a couple times in each direction. By bus and amtrak they only confirm your citizenship. They might search some bags, but it's never happened to me in four or five runs.
As for accommodations, you're going to be paying if you want a sleeper car. Like, up to ~$300 more than just a ticket to ride. The draw of amtrak, for me, has always been the price so your mileage may vary. As for the view, it depends where you travel of course. But the trip down the West coast is absolutely stunning. You pass up through the Cascades and see tons of natural scenery.

Blah blah blah
Tell it to the postal service - able to deliver a piece of paper to any location in the country in three days for $.50. Oh so inefficient.
