New laminar flow hood series I FP
    #19130778 - 11/13/13 11:14 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So naturally I may have fucked my flow hood up...

I understand you can make one for around 300 but I wanted to make sure it was a good one because chances are I would fuck that up too...

I sealed with silicone the hood on the filter box which I now understand may not be the best move.

The blower pushes A LOT of air through (when you do the lighter check to make sure you have consistent pressure you cant hold the lighter within two feet its so strong) which I thought was a good thing but now I'm thinking that may be the problem.

Also Im reading I should put a prefilter on there, can I just use tyvek envelope? especially since it pulls so much air I dont think this should be a problem.

Any feedback is seriously appreciated

Buying a new flowhood for this would be stupid just fix the old one. Cover the intake a little bit with some filter material. Make a prefilter if you haven't done it yet.

I though the FP flowhoods instruct you to use silicone caulk. Unless it's for something else?

"Item Description
FP’s least expensive Laminar Flow Hood now comes pre-assembled! All you need for final assembly is a screwdriver and a tube of silicone caulk. This unit comes with a scanned, 99.99% efficient 24 x 12 inch HEPA filter, fan, grounded plug and cord, 7-ply maple housing, screws and steel handles. Ideal for “on the road” tissue culture or for use in small clean-room environments. For those who have a limited budget, the Series I is uniquely affordable."

Can you explain or show pictures what you did exactly with you filter? what and where did you seal? I am asking this because the flowhood has to be sealed. It is a pressurised box and air should only go out through the filter.

I think your right Dead-phan, I'm probably just over thinking that aspect.

There was no prefilter...  Im wondering if I can make one from a tyvek envelope. And if its even necessary...

You can see the opening on the blower for the intake, and around it there's a flange you could unscrew and put what I'm assuming is a circular "prefilter" over it.

i gather a tyvek envelope will work.  just dont want it getting sucked into the blower.

ive seen people use cardboard to cut down the flow if it was too high.

suprising that yours would blow too hard at it was made to specification.  itd be great if you could post a picture or video of you doing the laminar flow lighter test.

I have the exact flow hood from FP. It was a gift from my pops. The first couple times I used it with no pre filter and it blew way too hard. But I had no contamination . I have recently applied a pre filter and it does no longer blow out  the bic lighter and it blows the flame at a 45 degree angle .

Cyn what kinda material you use as your prefilter... Ill most likely fashion one from tyvek envelopes tonight after work and try and remember to post my results

I used this as a prefilter.
It is very important to use a prefilter because your HEPA filter won't get clogged with bigger particles thus making its life longer.

I use a 3m air filter for your a/c unit got it at lowes for like $12 bucks I think it was the smallest on they sell. When I get time and feeling better I will get a pic posted.

I've fashioned a tyvek envelope "pre filter" onto the intake of the blower... now there is no positive output pressure from the entire box... When I have time to go buy another filter Ill hopefully have some positive results to post.

who knew buying a premade flow hood would prove to be more of a pain than a SAB

How much did the flow hood run you after shipping if you don't mind me asking?

Meh.  I get it. There is something to be said about assurity, and not having to do the labor.  U basically paid 300 or so extra for something delivered to your door already in tact. Pretty sweet deal to me. Granted after building my own I would never. But nothing is lost

Damn. I really want one bad but suck at building shit...not to mention finding the right filter, doing the math for the right fan, etc...wish I could pick one up somewhere for under 5

There is too much resistance with that tyvek envelope . Just go to the store and buy a decent furnace air filter , one that is in a box . Keep the box. Use the box and filter together to block off the intake to achieve laminar flow. By only using a fraction of the filter while it is still in the box to catch big particles . And using the box to block off  how much of the ever you need to achieve laminar flow.

So I purchased a prefilter thats for honeywell and vicks air purifiers, It looks like a fine black mesh - kind've like the roof cap venting material on your roof.

Fitted that over the intake of the blower and we are going strong!

(no contamination on tranfers yet - and as well as my agar test plate that I leave open to the laminar flow during all transfers to see if it catches anything and nothing yet:thumbup:)

Also what I've started doing is putting more of the prefilter material over the intake - the vacuum will hold the extra prefilter - while I'm doing my air "scrub" in the hours before any transfers. In my mind that helps keep the attached prefilter in better condition as well as the overall condition of the main hepa filter. (not sure if that's true but it makes me feel better )
