Meet The Silk Road Employee That The Dread Pirate Roberts Allegedly Tried To Murder

By Ryan Mac and Runa Sandvik
The alleged murder target of a secretive online drug kingpin was a 47-year-old semi-pro poker player and self-proclaimed former heroin addict who was caught with $27,000 worth of cocaine.
On Thursday, court documents filed in a Maryland district court revealed that Curtis Clark Green confessed to being an administrator of the Silk Road, an anonymous online drug marketplace. Known online as “chronicpain,” Green was a vocal member of the drug community who worked closely with site leader, the Dread Pirate Roberts, and frequently shared personal anecdotes and detailed advice on using and dealing illegal substances.
Early last month, federal authorities detained the man they believed to be the Dread Pirate Roberts, arresting 29-year-old Ross Ulbricht in San Francisco and accusing him of narcotics trafficking, money laundering and hiring hitmen for the murder of two people. One of those targets was Green, a grandfather and former paramedic who also sold oxycodone and other painkillers on Silk Road.
In a plea agreement signed Thursday, Green admitted to possessing, with the intent to distribute, more than a kilogram of cocaine, which he had accepted from an undercover United States postal inspector in January. An earlier criminal complaint from October against Ulbricht presented the same storyline surrounding an individual identified only as “the Employee.” That complaint alleged that Ulbricht had become aware of a Silk Road employee’s contact with federal agents and had attempted to pay a total of $80,000 to have that individual killed because of that interaction. Green’s real and online identities were not revealed in the original complaint.
By pleading guilty, Green acknowledged that he not only handled drugs but also worked as an administrator on Silk Road where he went by the handles ”Flush” and “chronicpain”. While he never knew his alleged boss by his real name, Green’s admissions will serve as another piece of the puzzle in authorities’ growing case against Ulbricht, who they say ran a $1.2 billion (sales) online drug operation and would do anything–even commit murder–to keep it running.
“ never killed a man or had one killed before,” Ulbricht allegedly said online as he was looking to find a hitman to take care of the employee. “But it is the right move in this case.”
Ulbricht is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, awaiting a bail hearing in a Manhattan district court that is scheduled for later this month.
Two Separate Lives
Green, on the other hand, is not in custody and was released on conditions, according to Marcia Murphy, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Maryland.
A resident of Spanish Fork, Utah, Green led two very contrasting lives, but disclosed many of his own personal details online. To the public he was Curtis Clark Green, a formerly unemployed 47-year-old who, because of an accident, never finished nursing school and lived with his wife Tonya in a quiet town 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. An entrepreneur, his most recent venture was as an officer at Bitcoin, LLC, which was incorporated in Utah in Sept. 2012.
But to the hundreds of thousands of anonymous names that populated the Silk Road, he was a pseudonymous administrator who fielded complaints from the site’s buyers and sellers, ran its user-written information page and peddled narcotics. Green first posted to the Silk Road user forums as chronicpain in June of 2011, and announced that he would be selling drugs like oxymorphone, oxycodone and “maybe” methadone and adderall.
“I’m new to the site but I’m not new to the game,” he noted, adding later that he had been selling drugs in the mail “for years” prior to the Silk Road’s creation. He covered his tracks, according to online posts, by wearing driving gloves while mailing packages and using post offices outside of his hometown.
Conveying himself as a drug connoisseur on the Silk Road forums mainly through the chronicpain account, Green details various exploits with everything from heroin to methadone despite claiming he “never used illegal drugs” in a statement following his guilty plea. In one post he said that his main reason for interacting on the Silk Road forums was “harm reduction” so that a person buying and taking drugs for the first time wouldn’t overdose.
Green could not be reached on Friday and calls to his attorney Scott E. Williams went unanswered.
The Real Curtis Green
Despite the amount of illegal activity that Green claimed he was involved with online, he seemed to have little fear in disseminating personal information on the Silk Road forums. His online chatter is peppered with personal stories and occupational history as he turned to the message boards for human interaction and companionship. In his early months on the site, Green said he was a one-time paramedic and manager of a popular cell phone chain store. He also noted that he once owned a transportation company that delivered lost luggage for airlines. Business records for the state of Utah show a Curtis Clark Green as the registered agent for Anytime Airport Shuttle, LLC, whose business registration expired in Aug. 2006.
Perhaps most revealing are his conversations about his prowess as a semi-pro poker player. In one thread he bragged that he had cashed in on two World Series of Poker events. Competition history from June 2010 shows that he placed 62nd in a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament–earning himself $2,742. One site suggested that Green’s other online name, “Flush,” derives from his poker playing.
As Flush, Green described his libertarian leanings, a political affiliation he shared with the Dread Pirate Roberts and also Ulbricht. “I’ve always had libertarian views,” Green wrote in Nov. 2012 a few weeks after the U.S. presidential election. “Ron Paul has been my guy for years.”
Records reveal several brushes with the law for Green and his family. In 1995, he and wife Tonya filed for personal bankruptcy in a Salt Lake City court. He also points to his wife’s past legal troubles in posts on the Silk Road forum, detailing her previous arrests and addiction to Xanax.
“She was arrested multiple times for shoplifting and doing other stupid shit,” he wrote in July 2011. “She’s lucky she didn’t kill herself or someone else while driving. It took a 3 month stint in jail to get her sober.”
According to one report from March 2006, Green and his wife faced insurance and fraud charges for visiting multiple doctors to obtain prescription painkillers. Investigators at the time said that the pair obtained about $25,000 worth of prescription drugs in less than 12 months.
Green and his wife’s experiences with monitored or illegal substances are well-documented on Silk Road postings. A frequent topic of discussion for the 47-year-old Utah man, drug-use had both its recreational and medicinal purposes for Green. According to his posts, he used heroin, detailing the effects of withdrawal on the forums. Other past addictions included methadone and benzos, also known as anxiety drug benzodiazepine, from which it took two years for Green to be “physically” and “mentally free.”
In another post he advises that users hoping to maximize the effects of “Opana,” a street name for Oxymorphone, eat fatty foods before taking the drug. “Don’t forget! Always eat a high fat meal before ingesting Opana!!! It increases the bioavailabilty by 20-40 percent,” he wrote. “I always eat a bigmac [sic] with fries or fried chicken.”
“The Employee”
Ranked 72 out of 276 vendors on Silk Road, Green as chronicpain had 100% positive feedback from 101 transactions as of Jan. 25 2012. To advertise one of his earliest drug listings in Sept. 2011, he announced on the forums: “Chronicpain has a VERY limited amount of Opana 40′s for less than 50 a piece.”
“Only a few, so, get them while you can,” Green wrote. “I think its [sic] a great way for those that want to try them but couldn’t because of the price that this is a good opportunity.. Its [sic] in the opioids section and just look for my one and only listing.”
However, it wasn’t his role as a seller that presumably made Green valuable to federal authorities, but rather his position as a salaried employee under the Dread Pirate Roberts. Chronicpain became an administrator on Silk Road on Nov. 2011, gaining the trust of the Dread Pirate Roberts–who authorities allege to be Ulbricht–by mediating problems on the site. Their downfall came more than a year later, as they looked to expand business on the anonymous online narcotics bazaar and facilitate larger supplies of drugs for their vendors.
An FBI spokesperson declined to comment, citing the on-going investigation.
According to court documents, an undercover agent began communicating with Ulbricht in April 2012, offering to sell a “substantial” quantity of drugs to a vendor who could then list the narcotics on Silk Road. By December of that year, Green had become involved, allegedly working on Ulbricht’s behalf as a middleman. He agreed to accept a shipment of one kilogram of cocaine–worth $27,000–which would then be given to the vendor. As a result, Green’s personal home was offered and used as a delivery address for the illegal substances.
On Jan. 17, 2013, federal agents paid a visit to Green’s white, suburban home in Spanish Fork, Utah where he was found to be in possession of those drugs. A criminal complaint signed on Oct. 28, 2013 by the U.S. district attorney in Maryland and unsealed on Thursday stated that authorities confiscated Green’s MacBook Pro laptop and Samsung phone after his arrest. They also seized $18,000 in cash and the contents of an account on Mt. Gox, an online Bitcoin exchange.
A search of public records in Utah and Maryland show no detainment records of Green, which suggest that he wasn’t in prison for long, if at all. A mugshot that surfaced on a citizen-created online timeline of Silk Road events confirmed that Green was arrested in January for cocaine possession.
The Hit
Upon hearing of chronicpain’s arrest, Ulbricht is accused of seeking out someone who could punish Green. Based on online conversations highlighted in court documents, Ulbricht told an undercover agent that his employee had not only been arrested, but had also stolen funds from other users. He then allegedly requested that the undercover agent help him find someone to hurt Green for his mistakes.
Only a few days later, authorities say that Ulbricht had changed his order to “execute rather than torture,” citing potential issues if a punished employee were to approach and inform authorities. The undercover agent agreed, asking the supposed Silk Road leader to pay two installments of $40,000 for the murder. The first payment came on Feb. 4, 2013, wired from an account with the now-defunct Technocash Limited in Australia to a Capital One Bank account in Washington, D.C.
Some time around that date, authorities informed Green of the situation. As the undercover agent engaged the Dread Pirate Roberts with details of the planned torture and murder, others worked with the Silk Road employee to stage the events. On Feb. 16 photos of Green’s staged torture were sent to Roberts. Less than a week later a fake photo of Green’s supposedly dead body was also delivered to which Ulbricht allegedly replied: “I’m pissed I had to kill him… but what’s done is done.” On Mar. 1, the second $40,000 installment was sent to the Capital One Bank account.
On Oct. 1 Ulbricht was arrested by FBI agents in the science fiction section of the Glen Park branch of the San Francisco public library system. Only a few weeks prior, Green had been offered a plea agreement based on legal documentation. He signed the agreement on Thursday.
It remains to be seen how Green’s story and experiences will factor into the prosecution’s case against Ulbricht. Joshua Dratel, Ulbricht’s lawyer, declined to comment on Friday.
For now, Green awaits sentencing where he faces a maximum of 40 years in prison for possessing with the intent to distribute more than a kilogram of cocaine. With sentencing scheduled for Feb. 28, 2014, he’ll at least be able to spend the holidays at home.
With additional reporting from Andy Greenberg and Sue Radlauer in New York.

The second murder's indictment was filed by the District of New York first and the first murder was filed by the District of Maryland second.

Thinking the same thing. If he wanted to not be killed, he probably should have not snitched on his organized crime associates.

I couldnt either, but he honestly had it coming. If he really supported the drug community he wouldn't have helped authorities against it. Sad that the drug war brings people to this. Choice between being there for your own family or ruining someone else's along with a large part of the drug movement. Not an easy choice, though you shouldn't be in the business if you can't take responsibility

In the USA about 1/3rd of all homicides go unsolved, I'd figure on doing it myself unless there was a solid connect. Hiring a hitman you don't know, who wants that kind of money with what collateral?

I thought the murder for hire charges against DPR were bullshit made up by the government until I saw this article. I do not know what is more shocking? A. That the Silk Road's mastermind, DPR, would do such a stupid thing or B. That a guy who looks like a fat lesbian and wears matching sweaters with his family would be involved with the distribution of a fucking kilo of cocaine

Yea, while DPR had I suppose proper connections, Green is lucky that he wasn't working with the Cartels or other crime organizations. His house would have just been fire-bombed and/or had his whole family's throats slit.

He obviously didn't have connections if he was hiring an undercover agent online. From what it sounds like DPR was an honest drug marketing dude and trying to off this guy was a last resort to save his own ass and the entire silk road empire.
Just what i gathered from this report. But yeah, green is lucky. And a moron. I guess this is why we have drug violence... Take no chances.

Why feel bad for a snitch. They are the lowest form of life, not even considered a person but more like that puss that comes out of a pimple or a squashed cockroach.

Yeah, the cynical part of me can't help but wonder if his government handlers didn't maybe have a hand in that picture. Looks way too upper-class-wholesome-All-American....
And I also find it funny... I read an article the other day about this guy... and absolutely nothing was mentioned about this guy being a former heroin addict. In fact, I'm pretty sure that article presented it as if this guy was not a drug user, and claimed his interest in silk road was purely due to a fascination with bitcoin, and wanting to work with it.
But I somehow very much doubt that someone who had never used drugs would be comfortable acting as a middle-man in a deal for a kilo of cocaine, which he had delivered to his house. Something does not seem right about that. And really, what IS the deal, with this guy, and drugs?
Quote:
The alleged murder target of a secretive online drug kingpin was a 47-year-old semi-pro poker player and self-proclaimed former heroin addict who was caught with $27,000 worth of cocaine.
Emphasis added.
Quote:
Green first posted to the Silk Road user forums as chronicpain in June of 2011, and announced that he would be selling drugs like oxymorphone, oxycodone and “maybe” methadone and adderall.
Quote:
Conveying himself as a drug connoisseur on the Silk Road forums mainly through the chronicpain account, Green details various exploits with everything from heroin to methadone despite claiming he “never used illegal drugs” in a statement following his guilty plea
Talked about illegal drug use... claims to never have used illegal drugs. Um... what?
Quote:
So which is it? Is he lying to the government, or lying to silk road? And telling people how to maximize their opiates is "harm reduction?" Hm.... IDK, but all the back and forth seems a bit odd.
Who knows... maybe this guy is really DPR. Maybe he set everything up, and Ulbricht was actually "The Employee," so this dude set him up for the fall, when he realized the feds were getting close? Okay, a bit off the wall, And perhaps not so plausible as my "Ulbricht is the fall guy for his best friend" theory.
But it still almost makes more sense than this guy's back-and-forth stories. heh....

Unless I'm missing something:
There's no way this guy would have given out his home address to accept delivery of a kilogram of cocaine to some random person on the internet. What kind of creditentials could an annoyomus person provided to Greene to make him feel comfortable enough to middle-man a kilogram of cocaine? He had to have worked with that person before. I wonder who it was...
This article is fucking fascinating. Seeing this all go down in real-time is really amazing. There's for sure more to this story. The mechanics of the black-market are so interesting.

Dpr is an idiot for putting this guy on salary. He already had an arrest record and a history with addiction and according to the content of his posts he couldnt keep his mouth shut. I don't see how this idiot could be successful in organized crime. That goes for dpr and green. It's a shame because the silk road was such a good idea. It'll be interesting to see if anyone can do something similar and actually cover their tracks properly..or if that's even possible still.

There are plenty of alternatives to SR already.
Agree on the shoddy job by DPR, doesn't make sense.

Are there any that touched sr? I sort of think there may be a bigger picture to this. Nothing too crazy yet. I bet dpr has tons of money hidden and bit coin stocks. Recently the value of bit coin more than doubled. There could be some huge investors that just doubled their money.

Banks are getting in on BTC now, bought some off WellsFargo last week Definitely a lot of people banking in huge off that investment though and its probably not too late, doubt it'll multiply as madly again ($25 in BTC a few years ago translated into about $800,000 recently) but compared to a standard investment
Personally I'll be putting money into the recreational marijuana field, if a company starts off with 99k and I invest 1k in with them (1%), a few years down the line they turn into a multi-million business.

$1000 here, $1000 there...
When SR went down BMR went down as well, apparently they felt compromised and shuffled their deck. Now it seems to me 'Sheepmarket' is the big one. Happy sailings to you

I'm curious how the stagnation of all that currency will change exchange?
Quote:
What determines bitcoin’s price?
The price of a bitcoin is determined by supply and demand. When demand for bitcoins increases, the price increases, and when demand falls, the price falls. There is only a limited number of bitcoins in circulation and new bitcoins are created at a predictable and decreasing rate, which means that demand must follow this level of inflation to keep the price stable. Because Bitcoin is still a relatively small market compared to what it could be, it doesn't take significant amounts of money to move the market price up or down, and thus the price of a bitcoin is still very volatile.
Seems like some individuals could stand to gain a lot here?
