Can Internet Pornography be Art?
    #19130327 - 11/13/13 08:32 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Pornography, art.

Two very slippery concepts, attempting to define them is sure to inspire furious debate. I won't attempt it.

But often we can mostly agree on whether a specific image is pornographic or artistic. You would find yourself in a very small minority if you argued that Rembrandt's paintings did not qualify as art. Photography as art is disputed by some (apparently), but many accept Ansel Adams' landscapes as art.

I would like to make the case that some forms of pornography can be considered as art. I will use this hypothetical example: a woman uploads to the internet a photograph of herself spreading her legs, clearly exposing her vagina. You don't need to see the image itself to judge whether or not it qualifies as art because I'm arguing the concept itself can be considered as art for the following reasons:

  • It's a powerful act of self expression. The woman's statement might be "I'm sexually available, and I want lots of people to know it."
  • It's primal in its motivation. It's a raw and emotional act motivated by our desire to reproduce (regardless of whether or not she wants to bear a child, her sexual nature is instinctive).
  • The impact the image has on its viewers is powerful, as it targets one of our most fundamental instincts directly.

What do you think?

I think that I'm not interested in that kind of art.  I like my porn artless.
