I just got a copy of my background check for a job today. Let me tell you, I've got a LOT of charges that have stuck. No felonies, but a lot of drinking/drug related misdemeanors.
The background check came back with six total charges, five of which were dismissed, and my only conviction was of underage drinking about 4 years ago.
Most of these companies are in it for the easy money, not for them to deny you a job. Maybe government background checks are more invasive, but I doubt it.

Depends on who does the background check. The government background checks are much more comprehensive than the companies that you pay $35 for a background check. Those companies generally just pull public records, which are incomplete. If they don't know that you lived in a certain state in the past, they are unlikely to pull records from there. Both types of background checks miss a lot of things, but the government ones miss less.
One thing that the government background checks get that the private ones don't is if someone called the cops on you but you were never arrested.
Background checks never involve phone records. Some companies want you to turn over your social media passwords as part of the check, though that is invasive and rare.

So, check this link out:

That makes Verizon appear to have the most privacy-friendly policy. Except that Verizon is alone in retaining the actual contents of text messages. It allegedly stores the messages for five days, while T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint don’t store them at all.
Wait, I don't understand. So Verizon is the only carrier that actually stores the content of text messages? That doesn't sound right.... so how do investigators in murder trials get text messages that suspects sent days or weeks before? Do they contact the NSA for that?
Basically, this means that if I have T-Mobile, AT&T, or Sprint, unless they contact the NSA they can't obtain my text messages, only which numbers I sent texts to?

The NSA doesn't have that data either, and even if they did, law enforcement couldn't get it.
Like I said earlier, old text messages aren't stored, so there's no way for them to get them without accessing the phone it was sent from or sent to.

That isn't entirely true.

No, nobody cares that you're pumping yourself up with roids, but if you're into some seriously shady shit, well, they can and will give information to specific law enforcement agencies.

The NSA can tip off law enforcement, but law enforcement has no method by which to request data from the NSA, and any such request would be largely ignored except in the rarest of cases.
