If you use a SGFC style fruiting chamber.

Has anyone ever tried putting your cakes/substrates directly on a wire rack allowing all sides of the sub to be exposed? (minus of course the part that touches the wire rack).
Wouldn't it allow the sub more surface area to spawn fruits from? from the bottom?
Something like this (these are stack-able):

If I'm not mistaken, surface area is not the constraining factor in yields.

Might be neat for having a tall but thin sgfc.

It's a good idea, I thought about this same thing a while ago. But my reason for not using it is this; The rack creates an equal environment on every side of the cake, which could mean bottom pins. I find that side and top pins are what you want. they grow larger than bottom pins (at least from my exp.). If you just stick with just foil under cakes, then the top and side should fruit nicely without bottom pins.

If they are traditional PF-style cylindrical cakes, what about laying them laying them on their side. Really hate it when I see people stacking subs on top of each other.
Seems like subs want to breath when they are fruiting, so why not give them as much area to do so with?
Flat or pan-style spawns could just sit flat on them without a container.
As far as bottom pins, if one gave them enough light from the bottom, wouldn't they just become upside down fruits? Would it take away from the growth or final yield from the top/sides?
Is there really that much advantage not exposing everything?

I did that very thing on my first grow which is still ongoing and has flushed twice so far. Never got all my cakes to fruit at the same time like the likes of fahtster, but it was straight MS from the first syringes I touched. I certainly dont think that exposing the extra area hurt production though... as you can see the cake in the middle pick did fine with bottom pinning.

OK, this is close, but I'm saying lift the rack OFF the perlite a couple of inches, and stack racks on top of each other.

you just cant tell from the picture, but the rack is off the perlite about 2 inches. and thanks At first the rack was directly on the perlite and some of the cakes were in contact with the perlite which is no bueno...So I got the racks up off the perlite a couple inches. The mushies wouldnt have grown off the bottom of that middle cake like that if it wasnt elevated

I just got some racks to try this yesterday. My reasoning was that there would be no opportunity for standing water to pool up beneath the cakes. Didn't get stackable ones though...
