First Bulk (verm/coir/coffee) Need Help
    #19127964 - 11/12/13 06:28 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Okay, so I have done about 4 different sets of 5 cakes, PF Tek jars, and I think I have a pretty good handle on those. Of the 20 or so jars, I've only lost, roughly, 3 or 4 cakes due to contamination, so id say my sterile procedure is working (for now). Soooo I have decided to try my hand at bulk. I have some containers (to-go containers to be exact) I got from Olive Garden, and a couple of other places, that I figured would be perfect for bulk. They are black on the bottom half, and come with a clear plastic lid that snaps on pretty tightly. I figured they would work perfectly because:

1.The lids snap on tightly so no need for tin foil. Plus they are clear, so I can check the progress pretty easily without the need of taking the lids off. I did for the pictures just to get clearer ones, and the condensation on the lid make it kind of hard to see.
2. The bases are black so no light can hit the sides, which (correct me if I'm wrong please) means no side pinning

Here are some pictures of the containers. Tell me what you think:

Well for the first bulk, I used a ratio of 1:10. I know what you are all thinking. "WTF?! NOOOO!" I know I fucked up. Not enough researching, I know now. But I used the Bucket Tek, and "pasteurized" it at 168 for 60 minutes adding 170 degree water (used a digital thermometer with a remote probe attached by a wire) every-so-often to keep the temp up. I used 40% Coir, 50% Verm, and 10% used coffee grinds. Well that one seems to be doing okay, but is taking FOOOORRREEEEVVVEEERRR! So I decided to do another one. This time I used a 1:4 ratio. I followed the bucket tek again and this is where i am at with this one:

Hows it looking? I'm not skilled enough as of yet to know when i should start the fruiting of this one. I'm guessing I'm about 75-80% colonized maybe more. Idk. But either way, tell me what you guys think. Constructive criticism is always welcome. *Note* Constructive....

You are wrong, side pins are from FAE, not light exposure.

Light will help the substrate pin anywhere else on the substrate that is optimal.

Use a plastic liner in the tub to prevent side pins.

The mycellium will stick to it as it consolidates and shrinks, eliminating that microclimate between the substrate and tub walls that side pins love.

Yup, looks like you're juuuust about there with that one.  I think you could find some more suitable containers than those, though.  They're kind of small.

In the future you might want to stay away from coffee.  For some reason it contaminates easily.  Any sort of herbivore poo you can get your hands on will help prevent contamination if you add it to the substrate.

Did you use grain or BRF as spawn for those minitrays?

@notahacker Okay thank you for the info about the liners. I'll keep that in mind my next grow.

@van der griegen I used these containers because I'm not too worried about going "huge" at this moment. I was more so using these for an experiment and to test my serialization.

Like I said, I have a couple of different sizes. One is 9 inches, one is 5, and the other is about 3 inches. I also have some tin foil tubs that I bought that are 7.5Lx5.5Wx3.75D. The tin foil tub is what i used for my first bulk attempt. I know I used a completely wrong ratio. Like I said, it seems to be doing okay, just taking HELLA long to colonize.

*Edit* Also would it be a better to just go with straight coir/verm sub? I only used the coffee grounds because I was attempting to get bigger/more fruits. I just wanted to use the coffee for more nutrition for the fruits.

One more question. When this is ready to go into the FC, should I take it out of the container or just leave it as is? Does it really matter?

They look decent.
Coffee is useful but you have to be extra clean around them as it's also loved by other myc contams.
I would leave them in the containers at least for the first flush.

If one of the benefits of pasteurization is the selective cultivation of thermophilic bacteria which help prevent contamination, then manure--which has thermophiles present in much greater amounts in feces than in any other material--reigns king.  Working on a proof for this.

@stygian thanks for the info. I was unsure if i was to treat it as a cake, or to leave it in the container.

@van der griegen Interesting info, please let me know when you get the proof
