Plastic Lids w/ SFD setup for g2g
    #19127506 - 11/12/13 05:08 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Okay..
Could this be the smoothest lid for G2G?
why or why not...

Curious to hear the pros and con from everyone on this particular lid setup.

Seems like it would be perfect for g2g lids but wasn't sure if the white plastic lids would let in contams without a gasket? I would think its tight enough while the SFD would be receiving all the air traffic but just not sure. I know RR uses canning lids metal side down so wouldn't this be the same deal?

Anyway, wanted to get some feedback

-Plastic storage lids ("not for processing" but stand up to PC'ing) with SFD's cut to the size of quarters.

The SFD's are attached to the top of the plastic lids (which have been scratched with a knife for the rtv to grip) with red RTV high temp.  Instead of just drilling one 3/8" or 1/4" hole for GE, 5 very tiny holes are made close together. The idea is to keep the RYE from ever touching the SFD, like RR does in his videos with three or four 1/16" or 1/8" holes in metal lids.

I've read some people talking about the plastic lids getting loose or to tight but I've never noticed any issue here. Metal lids have been almost impossible to get off in a glovebox at times, leading to a lot of stirring up in there to get those things cracked.  The plastic lids crack so easy and come off so nice it seems like the only way to go.... Any Thoughts?

The plastic lids work fine but Use a whole sfd  INSIDE the lid like it was supposed to be used. Cutting and gluing saves little Money and the glue comes loose over time. Trust me!

Have you had any problems with the sfd getting wet and contaminating through when used on the inside? I see how the whole sfd would work as a sort of gasket this way but It seems that this is a worry for some people.

Not unless the spawn is already contaminated!  We run a hundred quarts a week. Sfd are cut to size for a reason.  silicone can fail after a few rounds in the autoclave. Inside not out!

Do you do anything special to clean lids or sfd's before use?

Do they need bleached if their jars was contaminated. I know they will eventually get PC'd but do you take any special measures?

pc kills all in synthetic and metal materials so no extra precaution is needed.

I'm not sure what this means? Are you saying that plastics and metals are living things, i'm confused?

I am curious if a bacterial contaminated rye jar & lid need to be bleached right away so your not spreading bacteria?

Although I have to admit Amanita Virosa has never steered me wrong before I can say that using nickel size pieces of sfd glued on plastic lids has worked well for me so far. I think the mistake a lot of people make is using too little of an amount of silicone. I scratch the lid up with rough grit sandpaper and use a really big bead of silicone to attach the SFD over a 1/4 inch hole. I have lids I've made like this that has been through at least 25 pc cycles and still look great.

Yeah I think the extra silicone makes the difference.  Are those ball lids? I'm guessing you don't use gaskets inside, doesn't seem like anyone really does.

Do you think its better to have a few small holes instead of one ~1/4 hole so the sfd is shielded from rye or moisture?  Not sure if its really an issue.. just typing out loud again.. :/

if thoses plastic lids come in contact with the inside wall of your PC or other jars in there,
for any amount of time,
they WILL warp..youll wish you had medal lids and bands then..i know i did!

There is no kind of gasket but I've never had an issue. Also i use 1 1/4 hole without any issues.

Like I said I have plastic lids that have been through many pc cycles and they're still good as new. I guess to each their own

if anybody thinks those lids are airtight, just try this:
fill a jar with water..
screw on plastic lid real good and tight..
turn jar upsidedown..
it might take a few seconds at first, but you will watch it start to leak  IME

Well that's all well and good but they don't need to be leak proof. They just need to be contam proof and ime they are. Simple as that

I'm not even sure what we're arguing here. If you don't like plastic lids don't use them. If you do like them use them.  They work fine for many of us here
