Don't you need microscopy to get to that ID?

Maybe, its a good macro match, but I don't know P. fimicola very well...  Its probably not P. cinctulus and I'm not sure what else we could consider without keying it out in Gerhardt's keys which requires micro.

I really think those are P. fimicola. The really dark pin gives it away, and I wish I could see those bottom two photos more clearly. OP can you try and repost those last two photos larger? They look very similar to the "turf mottlegills" I find here in North Georgia. They grow all over sodded lawns in the late summer/autumn.

it was the greyish black description of the spores that lead me away from p.fimicola, never seen it before though so i can't say what greyish/black is/ thiis looks as black as black gets:shrug:

I'd describe it as charcoal black, yes. Same for P. cinctulus pretty much. Subgenus Copelandia probably has a more blackish-purple cast to it.

ok well when i went and looked at the pins popping up some are backish but others a foot away or so are a greyish/brownish/tan color, maybe a couple diffrent species? as long as the prints are black i'm dealing with an active pan though right?(i realize both olives/fimicolas are weak)

Yes black spore print confirms they are not Panaeolina foenisecii.

That is not enough microscopy for an accurate ID. We would need to see what are called sulphidia. Or only 4 pronged basidia I guess...

You can't identify Panaeolus species from just spores, do they have sulphidia on the gill face?  Is the germ pore oblique in the side view?  What does the cheilocystidia look like?  As far as I am aware, basidia are only useful with Copelandia, but it doesn't hurt to take note if its 4 or 2 spored.

This species has now been grown out and samples where sent to Joust.  He reported sulphidia and is leaning towards fimicola.

Here are a few pictures of them:

The way the cap planes out and the gills, they really remind me of the P. fimicola I found in GA in sod plantings.

I almost agree but The gills aren't  right for cinticulus.

Im interested to see what this comes out to. I think ive seen similar species along the columbia river but then again.....
