Poplar wood uses??
    #19126796 - 11/12/13 02:48 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I recently found a mill that has copious quantities of untreated poplar wood scraps.  i would like to cultivate oysters or some other edible/medicinal mushrooms on this wood but i am unsure as to what mushroom would be appropriate for this wood.any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  the wood is scraps of various sizes and would need to be chipped or ground first to be used.

1)What mushrooms can i use on this wood?

2)Is poplar a hard or softwood?

3)What kind of wood chipper would i need to prepare the wood and how should they be chiped/ground up?

Poplar?  Is it liriodendron tulipifera (tulip poplar) or populus (cottonwood/aspen).

well I think poplar is a softer hardwood, but i'm not an expert.  and you need a chipper that's appropriate for whatever size your dealing with.  most consumer models take 2-4" diameter sticks.  if you're thinking about a commercial venture, we switched back to pellets from free sawdust because of the saved labor.  time=$

Untreated fuel pellets. You can get them at Rural King or similar stores.

$210/ton at Walmart here.  That's 50 bags, 40lbs each.

Tractor supply here.  I also hear lowes.  I got them from the factory an hour from me once, but I had to pay someone with a truck to take me.  So it was actually more expensive total cost, $160 per ton from the factory plus 100 for this guy to drive me.

I have a mass of white poplar wood that I plan on using as a substrate for poplar, king oyster, woodear, and a few others. I assume it will be ok
