Where do you get your rye grains? How much?

i get mine from Amazon. Great River Organic Milling Organic Whole Grains Rye, 50-Pounds. I am a prime member, so it comes to 41.96 with free shipping. this is only the second time I needed it and they are out of stock. they usualy arent for long, but i need some within a week. im waiting on a phone call back from great river milling, as they can tell me when the next shipment is being sent to amazon. last time it was within a week. anyway, just wondering other options. preferably online. but also, just curious. i know certain parts of the country it is dirt cheap.

Of all grains, I have found rye to be the cheapest. 99 cents a lb from the local health/natural food grocery store from the bulk section. If you are doing bags, each one takes about 3lbs of grain.
It is not as good a deal as what it sounds like you were getting on amazon, but you also don't need to buy 50 lbs at once. You can just make like 3-4 bags at a time.

ive been hesitant to switch to wbs. only because, im set in my ways, and have my rye grain prep down to a T. im just a lil nervous to switch, as silly as im sure that is. to be honest, ive only read so much about wbs prep in passing. i usualy skim through, but i recall reading quite a few different takes on it. i recall some posts ive come across people having trouble getting moisture content right. that, and many different methods of prep.
however, youve never steered me wrong NAH420, and if nothing else, ive learned quite alot for you and have you to thank for answering alot of questions for me. Do you have any one WBS tek you can point me to. i really should take a stab at it if i can go in saving that much on it versus rye grains. i

Local wholefoods. 50# bag for $62 after taxes. I have to go pick it up.
I just recently bought WBS for $8.?? for 20# at wal-mart. Looks like the same package FH uses.
I just put agar in my first WBS jars.
Like you, I have rye down.

With the WBS I get from HD I just rinse them really good in hot tap water, soak them in hot tap water for about 24 hours, strain for about 20-30 minutes, then fill my jars and PC for 100 minutes @15psi.
I take them out the PC when the pressure drops, and shake them a few times each as they cool to room temp.
They end up being perfectly dry on the outside, and they bounce around like BBs.

Depending what your locality is like you can find rye on craigslist, or google grain supply, farm supply, or feed supply, and start calling around.

yeah, is that what i want? they do bounce around like BBs. i was worried that they were too dry. i am using that same WBS from home depot and i have SFDs on quart jars. i didnt use the flat metal piece on the screw tops, just the rings, cause the SFDs are pretty thick and the tops wouldnt screw on properly. it looks like the top of the jars are drying out way too much. you ever had tis problem?

i can get a bag of rye grain at a feed store 50 pounds for $24. the company is steve ragen company.
i just started working with WBS and its a hell of a lot cheaper, i know that. seems to be pretty popular here. thats why i went with it. i even did a couple jars of half and half, WBS and rye grain after i prepared them separately.

I get my rye from a seed place for ~$20 for 40 or 50 lbs. I forget the weight of the bag.
I've been considering switching from rye to WBS. WBS sounds so much easier. Having to boil 20 cups of grain and shake them all with the colander is time consuming and not fun at all.
How does the yield compare to rye?

The metal lid helps keep in the moisture. Leaving it off will likely lead to grains drying out.

when measuring out jars, before hydration, is it the same for WBS as it is for grain? being that with grain they nearly double in size.
for grains, i use just under a full quart of dry rye grain, which ends up coming out to two full hydrated quarts.
so, when measuring WBS, do i do they same. or is the difference in size less when hydrated? more? roughly equal?

Never used rye, so I have no input on that.
However WBS are grains as well....I think you meant to say rye a few times but said grains instead.

ah yes.....right! well, yea. Rye basically doubles in size from dry to hydrated. so when i am prepping a soak for 14 quart jars, as i usualy do because of what my pc fits, i measure out roughly 7 quart jars of dry rye grains, which after hydrated, fill up 14 quart jars.
say i want to hydrate enough WBS for 14 jars, how would i go about measuring out what i want to hydrate dry?

Use about 7 full to the top quart jars of dry WBS.
They will not double in size, but they will get a little bigger.

about 2.25 quarts of dry rye gets me about 7 quarts filled about 2/3-3/4.
It takes me 4 quarts of dry WBS to get the same as hydrated rye.
It seems I could use less WBS being as it is more inoculation points. IDK. My first WBS is colonizing right now.

yea i figured id go with 8 quarts of wbs for my first go around to get it to 14 jars at 3/4 full to be on the safe side. thanks guys! not sure why it took me so long. i guess i get set in my ways, but, im psyched to be paying a whole lot less on wbs. heading to the store soon to pick up a 40 lb'er
