Just planted my poppies yesterday, will update this thread with pictures of this season. It may be a little late for some of you because the frost has already come, but i'm in SOCal and the night temps are perfect for germination!
edit: Ask any questions about your pods here and I will do my best to answer!

If you sow them now you harvest in late spring/early summer. If you sow in spring you harvest in late summer/ early fall. You theoretically can have two harvests a year, depending on where you live.

Thank you very much itsaconspiracy! Its dropped down to the mid 50's low 60's at night where I am, which is perfect. Also they need the sunshine during the day for germination,so LA winters are perfect for poppies. I know this season will be good, I can feel it.

Hey could you explain how you thin to clusters of 2 or 3 without killing or damaging the poppies? and what does it look like before planting and after?

You just pull out the weaker looking sprouts, leaving clusters every few inches. Its easy to just tug them out by hand. I dont know how else to explain it.

sorry bro I was asking more about how strong the root system is like could just pulling them out of the soil damage whatever root system they've created. I thought by clusters you were gonna dig up small chunks of soil with 3 or 4 sprouts on it.

The roots are weak and delicate. They do best when you eliminate competition allowing your healthiest seedlings to get the best head start. Curious how your yield is without the longer hours spring and early summer provide. Any slow growth issues?

Heres an update:

Thinned out now, but still not completely thinned. Gave them some ferts today, not on the heavy side and quite diluted. Should be seeing some vigorous growth soon, poppys start very slow, but once well established, with well developed roots, and given a lot of space both in depth and width will grow quite vigorously. I wish I had the room to plant in the ground, you can get huge plants!

Hmm. You're making me wanna do this. Since I'm completely inexperienced, how do you germinate them? Do you sprinkle them on top of the dirt and leave them outside? Should I put water on them? Should they be buried just a little? I'm sorry, I know these questions are stupid but everyone has to start somewhere.

Not stupid questions at all! You just spread them on top of the soil, because they need a lil sun to germinate also they like the cold night temps of winter, unless you get frost/snow. Dont water heavily at all because they have very weak root structures especially when first germinating. It will take 10 days until you see little two leaved shoots pop up, continue to water daily and gently. A few months later you should have some juicy pods!

would it do any good to sprinkle seeds in the middle of winter since I wasn't able to spread them in the fall like most growers say is best? I figure no matter what time you spread them before or in the middle of winter it shouldn't make to much of a difference. Is this correct?

This depends on how cold your winter is, do you get frost? It might be best to plant in spring and harvest in summer!

Well I'm in hardiness zone 7 at 10 to 0 Degrees F in winter and I guess we get a bit of frost but not much or often, Mostly the weather hovers around 30 to 45 degrees throughout most of the winter. So if the winter is like this in my area it wouldn't be a good idea to sow seeds in fall like I read would allow for 2 different harvests for summer?

Im harvesting in Spring, planted in November, but may have been able to plant a little earlier. The weather here (SOCal) is very mild and is perfect for poppies year round. Poppies are very hardy and will winter-over if there is frost, but if it is too cold they wont grow again until spring or whenever it warms up.

They like some chilly nights for germination, but even more so do the poppies love soaking up sun during the day, getting the growth they need to flower in spring.

You can get two crops even if you plant in spring, then plant again a few weeks later.
Also if you "dead head" them after you lance the pods you can get at least two lots of pods from each bush.
I gave up growing my own as the govt grows hectares of them each year for pharmaceutical use, they are all over the UK.
Check out my harvest 2012 thread for some poppy porn. vvv

I am living back in that area again now so it's about 20mins on my bike to a variety of locations.

There are certain Tasmanian strains that are bred to lack in morphine, but are heavy in thebaine for pharmaceutical purposes. I wish those fields were by my house though!

It's good you posted that Errolscool since it reminded me to ask about the different Tasmanian poppy flower colors that I believe to be white, dark red, light red or purple and something that keeps coming up as the strongest but I've only seen a pic once I believe but it's called the Tasmanian purple. What I was wandering is if these all have about the same concentration of alkaloids or does each type of flower dictate a different active concentration?
Also what exactly is thebiane and is it a sought after compound?

Im not sure about concentrations and thebaine is only sought after by the pharmaceutical companies that use it to make orally active opiates like codeine, hydrocodeine, and oxycodeine.

Pink ? You might want to check with someone before ingesting any pink O . People have been saying it is Thebain.

Yeah I was worried for a minute and then did some research on certain Afghani strains. All thebaine seed crop is destroyed and usually turned into biofuel, very protected.

In commercial poppy production like this I wonder what they do with the pods once they've laced them? Some sort of crude opium extraction I would imagine but I wonder what method they use.

It seems once one flowers they all do. There is a total of like 6 pre-flowers on each plant! I also have some babies ready for later in the summer!

My babies--

This poppy I actually didnt plant in the pot with the San Pedro, it seems the seeds must have spread from last season! What an amazing plant haha.

In commercial poppy production they take the whole plant as "poppy straw" and extract thebaine.
