Anyone have any insight on a malfunctioning chainsaw.
    #19119723 - 11/11/13 10:17 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Spent all afternoon cutting wood for the winter on sunday and it went great untill the saw started acting all weird. Turned it off to move cutting locations and when i turned it back on it fired up fine engine sounded/sounds like its running fine, but when i give it any throttle the chain starts moving much much slower than it normally does. Sounded like the engine was running fine. If you were not looking at the chain you would think it was running fine. Really hoping i don't have to bring it in the the hardware store for them to charge me 75 bucks an hour to get it running right. Any comments or suggestions?

pull the side cover off where the chain and clutch are located.take the chain off and inspect the bar for saw dust getting in the grooves, also check the clutch to make sure its clean and free of debris.

Going to pop it off when i get home tonight. Cut a ton of wood before it started acting up so that could be part of the problem. thanks boss

Sounds like you are indeed running lean and it is fixing to seize. start by draining the fuel first and refill with fresh fuel just take your mix  ( from the original mix)and add about 7 or 8 drops of oil to the new fuel (in the saws tank). shake it around a bit. I just had the same problem with a weed whacker this summer. But do as the previous poster suggests as far as the bar and bar oil goes as well. Running a bit rich won't cause the plug to foul. See if it works better . If that's the problem cool if not you may have to dick around with the idle screw. You are using bar oil right?

I know this is a dumb question but is your chain too tight/loose? Do you have one of those lawyer devices that makes you fool around with the chain guard before it will start? The next thing I can suggest is to file off the burr along the bar on both sides. If you can take your finger and it catches on the edge, it must be filed off. Also turn the bar (flip it) every time you change fuel/bar oil. Make sure that the bar oil is coming out at a correct flow. There should be a knob that turns to regulate the amount of oil that is dispensed to the chain. Also do what pretzelking suggested and flip the bar before putting it back on after cleaning out the debris that should be around the drive socket. It should be slightly wet (bar oil is coming out) and if it isn't, your bar oil needs to be adjusted so that the oil comes out at the correct pace.

Hope you get it fixed and this helps you.

Sincerely,
bootster

Definitely start with the bar and clutch assy like some of the folks above me posted. Pull the sprocket and remove the clutch bell and clean it out. Doesn't take much debris packed in there to slow the chain down.

In all reality, you should pull the chip cover and clean it out along with the bar everytime you get done with it. Buy a raker gauge. They work fantastically for cleaning the bar grove.

It's also a good idea to loosen the chain when you're taking a break, especially if it's cold outside. If you adjusted it at all while you were working and then let it cool, it can shrink and bind on the bar.
