Always wondered where to get a bunch of silica gel without robbing packets from shoe boxes or buying lots of OTC pills...

Ha ha ha!!! Yea... Took me a while before it dawned on me one year while looking at some pressed flower art.
The really good stuff comes in a clear container about the size of a coffee can. After you use it, you put it back in the container with the lid off, nuke it in the micrwoave for a minute or two, stop/shake/repeat, until the little blue pebbles become white like the rest. Then it's good to go again. Awesome stuff.

Why not put it on a cookie sheet in the oven with the door Open to let out the moisture.
Or better yet don't spend your money on all of theses little parts And just buy a dehydrator?
A dehydrator is worth every penny.

I like silica gel because it can be used in sachets inside of containers to keep them dehydrated after they've been dried. It also works great to speed the initial process w/o heat.

but it's absorption ratio is rather poor. Even baked gypsum works better, is also non-toxic and can me readily made into packets of whatever size you like for cheap.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Glass jars keep all moisture out as well. Unlike plastic zip bags.

good to know, thanks. where would you pick that up? a garden store? craft shop?

That depends on the jar. I've had specimens go moldy on me in tightly closed glass jars before, which is why I like to keep a desiccant in with them now.

That happened because the mushrooms were not properly dried out. Or, you were not using a canning jar. Only way to go.

Unless you have desiccant, then you can re-use food jars instead of buying canning jars.

to each their own. I can foods at home and grow lots of edibles so I always have canning jars on hand.
Good luck.

I rent and have no garden... property mgmt wouldn't be down with larger-scale cultivation. I also don't drive right now, so picking up a flat of canning jars isn't all that convenient.

dryrite, damprid, or probably even just the junk from inside drywall, crumbled up and baked to compete dryness.
You can buy guaranteed clean gypsum from chemical suppliers on google shopping, amazon or ebay.
It's just a mineral desiccant, useful for drying all kinds of thing, and there's no reason it should be sketchy to buy.
