crappy pinset ?'s
    #19124530 - 11/12/13 01:38 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hello all,

Just getting ready to harvest my 2nd flush on a mini-monotub, and I swear not a single mushroom grew on the top of my substrate block, but they were a-plenty on all sides and even the very bottom of the block :mad2:    I don't use liners on my tubs, side pins don't infuriate me to the level they do some folks on here

The first flush didn't have very many pins on the top of the block either, but there were a few.... this flush there was not nary a one.  I realize pics would be helpful, but that is just not possible for me right now.  I make my monotubs exactly like in Frank's guide to dial in your monotubs.

Question 1:  Can this just happen sometimes (no pins at all on top) even if your tub is dialed in properly?  It wasn't a multispore tub - I had taken a clone from a previous harvest, grew it out on a petri and made a couple of master jars I g2g'd from there.  So it's not an isolate either, just a clone.  I have had tubs that have had nice pinsets on top in addition to the side pins, but also ones like this one where there was no or very few pins on top.  But my tub design hasn't changed.  I can't seem to find a pattern/connection on what makes some tubs have "top pins" vs ones that don't.

Question 2:  Since I don't use liners, I always get a bunch of side pins, but that is okay with me.  If I did start using a liner, would all those side pins somehow decide to grow on top of the block?  Or would those mushrooms just be lost altogether and not re-populate on top if I used a liner?  (hope that question makes sense)

not too experienced here, but I would say that though u may have followed exactly the Tek and "dialed in properly" but perhaps u did not do it "like a boss" vis a vis Frank.  IME when shits not going right on top, but its going right on the sides its a humidity/moisture thing.  Side pins and bottom pins can be cause by light from no trash bag barrier/mock tray like ur setup, but they can equally be caused by a great micro climate there for fruiting!  You wouldn't want to live in an environment not suitable for humans, mushrooms don't want to fruit in an environment not suitable for them.  What color is the top of ur substrate?  I remember reading that blueish (not green) can be caused by drying substrate...mine seems to turn a bit yellow when I went overboard with the FAE on trays.
Like I said not too experienced with those great big behemoth monos (only done one that went well) I usually do the bucket monos (I like experimenting with agar, and am not yet confident enough to throw all my experimental eggs in one tub) so thats just my 2 cents:)

Hope u still got a decent harvest!

How can you consider your tub is properly dialed in when you can't get any mushrooms to grow on your substrate's top side?
I'd have to say your tub is not properly dialed in.

Using a liner essentially eliminiates side and bottom pinning for at least one flush, but likely will last two flushes or more.

The major advantage to using a liner is never having to worry about bottom pinning again. The liner will slowly pull away from the substrate sides, but as you know the substrate also gets smaller flush by flush so side pins become easier to pick. The thing is, bottom pins are NEVER easy to pick and cause more trouble than resolve for me, personally.

What you need to do now is properly dial in your tub so that mushrooms will grow on the surface of the substrate. The idea is to keep near 100% humidity at the substrate level, to help knotting and subsequently pinning.

If you fiddle with your tub and just can't seem to get consistent results (after adding the use of a liner) then I would suggest looking into casing your substrates. Most people have come to the conclusion that cubes are fine without a casing, but you will also find people that stand by using a casing because at the end of the day it is beneficial.

Last note: some people use artificial casings such as bubble wrap, or wax paper. I know Frank doesn't like these alternatives for use in a monotub and believes that if you're not getting results in a monotub that it's not properly dialed in, which is the advice I already gave you. It is the first thing Tmethyl says...

Disclaimer: You cannot make an optimal environment more optimal. If you have a perfect environment, there is no need for any WP/BW.
Nor will you benefit from BW/WP if your cultural environment is optimal without it. This is a tool, if you are having no issues with pin sets, pinning speed, or humidity, you need not use bubble wrap or wax paper.

Good luck

I used to use liners when I was worried about side pins.

It does pull away from the sides, but if you shove plastic shopping bags or something in between the liner and the wall of the tub, it will stay snug against the substrate block and still prevent side pinning into the 3rd and 4th flush if you decide to take it that far.
