The Official Bolt-action Appreciation Thread!
    #17251344 - 11/20/12 09:31 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

this thread is for all those that love bolt action rifles

post pictures. have discussions. ask questions.

i'l start out with a question. I'm looking into buying a bolt-action after spending some time with friends on the range. i want something powerful but also something that doesn't burn a hole in my pocket ammo wise. i'm thinking 30-30 or .223 is but my friend is saying might as well get a Remington 700 and pay extra because its a better rifle altogether i think .308 pretty expensive. so i guess the question is should i shell out more money for a higher calibre? its not like i want to take down a bear, but a moose would be awesome but i dont think a .223 could take down a moose? but .308 probably could, but I've never seen a moose hunting,so i don't know

(my friend had both 700 and .223 remington and i got to spend some time with both that's why im so torn)

Browning A-Bolt in 30-06:

Traded a $400 Ruger .40 for the whole rig on armslist.com
Dude emailed me a day later after he figured out how badly he fucked up.
Needless to say, I wasn't willing to trade back.

I have a 270 and the only difference between that and a 25-06 is miniscule. You can load a 30-06 down to a 25-06 bullet weight or load a 25-06 up to a 30-06.

That's why I have a 270 (27-06). The bullets are easy to find if you get in a bind, or the fact that they are relatively inexpensive, especially if you buy in bulk.

The 25-06 is just an expensive paperweight. You won't find them in a side of the road dealer, or a hunting buddy (they know how expensive they are). The gain is minimal. Just like the 280 Rem.

If I run out of ammo, or find a hunting partner in a pickle, someone at camp will have a 270 Win.

Don't get me wrong about how accurate they are. 6.5 mm is the pinnacle of ballistic heaven, but if you are hunting, the 270 Win is the most versatile. I have some brass and a die for the 25-06 just sitting.

I would get a 257 Weatherby if I were going for a premium load.

I'm not knocking your choice of loads, but unless you're paper punching, I'd go for a more popular round.
