Gills:
Stem: Stems were dark in color and hollow
Cap:

Spore print color: Sorry didn't bring any home I plan on going back tomorrow and will update if I get a chance to get the print.
Bruising: No changes in color that I noticed.

You've found an Armillaria species.

Oh so many many things
Habitat color (stem, cap, gills, spores, chemical changes) Size shape and textures (stem, cap, gills, spores) Smell Taste Season Temps Geographic location Elevation
Just keep hunting and all of these things will fall into place. With helpful nudges. Reading helps. Asking for ID requests helps. Getting some books and using them really helps.
Congratulations on your first mushroom hunt. It stays fun forever. Well, as long as I have been doing it.
Oh wait, you meant species of Armillaria. That is a can o worms my friend.

Possibly yes. Many folks across the world enjoy them. The caps that is.
They must be cooked thoroughly or they might make you sick.
I don't know about the edibility of any black stemmed species though. Maybe someone does.
