Ovoid cultivation from print?

I think it would be possible and neat to plant some in GA.  Now would be a good time to do your chipping and collecting of seeds and nuts or whatever and let things age a bit for next year.  Corn is a good thing to stock up on now.  If you freeze an armfull of fresh ears of feed corn you could have plenty of vigorous spawn for next spring.  Sure it's not hunting but still fun if you ask me.

I have an ovoid print, but I've never grown any mushrooms nor do I have syringes or any of the necessary equipment. Any ghetto tek for getting these spores going?

What you should do is pour some agar plates and swipe the spores on to agar.

You will not need syringes.

You will need a glove box, jars, grain spawn, pressure cooker, etc...

Pressure cooker? Everything sounded great until that... Why not just go grain spawn onto shredded cardboard or something, then work it up to woodchips in a bed or whatever?

Really? And how to you produce that grain spawn without sterilization?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

The pressure cooker is the main thing you don't want to skip.  You can get one for $30 or less.  Mine has paid for itself many times just cutting down on cooking time of food.

I like to make pda but with a bit more water added to make a gravy like consistency and innoc with wild print then 4-7 days drop the goo into a sterite grain jar that has a top 3/4 inch layer of pulped egg carton with a piece of egg carton on top of that as a landing pad.  With this method I've only got one contaminated jar out of over 2 dozen jars, and that was accounted for from doing something stupid.  I've done this with 5% karo as well with excellent results.  I posted this on the cult forums and got nothing but naysayer comments which is understandable since most grow cubes and this doesn't work for cubes very well.  After you get just one clean colonized jar, you can be extremely ghetto about things.  Ovoid mycelium is extremely forgiving about contams.  Something else that worked well with open air sporulation was cherry pits.  I just did it really fast in a small mostly sealed box with the cardboard layer.

Can you enlighten me a little more on this peach pit thing? Sounds interesting. And I know you can sterilize without a pressure cooker using boiling water (steam), but does the pressure cooker just have that much better of a success rate?

Boiling water is barely hot enough to sterilize containers of grains.

Even with a pressure cooker you need to cook it a long time to get the inside sterile.  Without a pressure cooker you would need to cook it much longer, and the success rate is low.

Grains are very nutritious, so you need to get it 100% sterile, 99.99% is not good enough.

Thanks stevo yeah I knew you said cherry... my brain got all excited because I have loads of peach pits here in GA. I think they might even work better. The outside is all "brainy" yet woody, and the inside is a nutty substance (like an almond). I might try half the print on a "wild" setup, because the print is probably already contaminated anyway... If I end up needing a new hobby I'll spring for the PC.

When I was making grain spawn in the day, I did have much success using the 'fractional sterilization' technique, using multiple heat processings via hot-water bath with 12 hour break between.

It's no substitute for steam/pressure sterilization, but in a pinch it's certainly a substitute for it :P
