Best location for SGFC?
    #19122750 - 11/11/13 07:43 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everyone! This is my first post here so first off I would like to thank all of you that have been so helpful so far for supplying all this information! You guys are the best. But there seems to be one thing I'm not quite sure of yet. The BEST location for my sgfc.
I'm currently doing my first grow and all I'm waiting for is my spores in the mail. I'm doing 24 half pint wide mouth BRF jars and using a pressure cooker and all that good stuff. I had originally planned on putting my sgfc in a double door closet by my living room but now am afraid I won't get enough FAE.
The closet leaves a few inches of space on the sides of the chamber and probably a foot of space on each end between the tub and the walls of the closet. The ceiling is about 8 feet high but unfortunately I would have to keep the closet door closed as it is right next to my front door (though there IS little slits going up both doors, would that be enough to facilitate normal FAE?

My other options are my basement (would rather not as temp is lower than 65 and it's not too clean) or my bedroom. The temp in my bedroom is better, usually around 72 and there's a window which would provide light. My only question is, what about my dog? I'm not worried about him eating my cakes or screwing with the sgfc but would he pose any threats to my cakes? He really only sleeps in my room at night and doesn't shed much as he is short haired but I haven't read anything about pets being around the sgfc so I figured I would ask!  And would typical foot traffic of myself entering and exiting my bedroom disturb /increase contamination chances in my fruiting chamber? Or would the colonized mycelium be able to defend against basic things like that.  I'm not a dirty person, my room is clean besides the occasional bit of laundry on the floor.

Also, sometimes I run a fan at night to help me sleep, would this disturb normal airflow? Any comments on what you think would be the best location would be appreciated!!! Ideally I could just put it in my living room but it's not something I want every person who comes over knowing about!! Hopefully I'm not coming off as too much of a noob but I just want to do this all right. Thanks again everyone

I would use the closet if you have at least 6-12 inches on all six sides it should work just fine. otherwise the basement would also work and the somewhat cooler temperature would slightly slow you down but at the same time give you slightly thicker stems. As long as the area is *clean* the colonized cakes are quite contam resistant so you should be good pretty much anywhere but your kitchen or bathroom. I wouldn't use it in the bedroom if you plan on using that fan for ~8 hours overnight.

Cool, I don't usually use the fan in my room because usually the tv being on does the trick, I only use the fan for noise. With that being said you think the closet or
Basement would work? Fanning and misting/normal maintenance on my end won't be an issue regardless of where they are. Just wanna give my cakes the best chance they can get

Edit: I'm willing to just not use the fan at all while my fruiting chamber is in my room, if you guys think my room would be best

I say closet. I used to use a closet that was ment for a stackable washer / dryer and it worked fine.
It had a light in it though...

I would have to see your basement to make a judgement but I would say most basements I see are clean enough if you can put it on a table and then elevate the SGFC off of the table that's even better. The only thing I would worry about is bugs but that may or may not be a problem you'll have to be the judge. The closet should work too. I would probably choose that if the basement is sketch.

Yeah it's an unfinished basement, concrete floors concrete walls with a low ceiling. Some spider webs and stuff. Haven't seen any bugs or anything flying around down there but I would assume there has to be more there than upstairs. Il give it a good look though and see how well I can clean it.  it it doesn't look do-able I will probably go with the closet tho, I figure regular fanning and misting/monitoring will help with FAE. Thanks for the advice!

FAE is always constantly provided by a proper SGFC. Fanning doesn't provide FAE it's only purpose is to lower the RH inside the SGFC after misting so that the misting has something to kickstart it's evaporation. The perlite is evaporatively cooled and this makes air molecules closer together the low pressure zone in the perlite draws air in from the bottom holes and it's pushed out the holes above the perlite. This isn't pushing out the CO2 either this is just FAE. CO2 mixes with the air it's not a layer right above the perlite. Hopefully this gives you an idea of how the SGFC is designed to work and provide FAE.

Ah okay, makes sense. So if I still follow all guidelines for sgfc (4 inches of perlite, 1/4 holes spaced every 2 inches) I should still be fanning and misting 3-5 times a day though correct?

Perfect, thanks a lot man. I also plan on getting a 6500k daylight bulb on a 12/12 cycle in the closet too and the heat usually sticks right at 69 degrees so I'm hoping it works well! Hoping to get this all started Friday wish me luck!

My closet sounds similar to what you used. It's right next to my front door (meant for hanging coats and what not but me and my roomate don't use it so it's empty). as for the lighting I plan to get a 6500k daylight bulb (that seems to be what is recommended) on a 12/12 cycle. You never had issues in that siZe closet though?

I used to grow in the closet but I now prefer to use a whole room. I don't use my SGFC's much anymore but I get better results with them in the center of the room. As for my mono's, they just generate way too much heat and the closet becomes a sauna. I got two dogs that shed and my pitbull is pretty much a hurricane of destruction, my biggest fear was her knocking everything over. But she now knows not to go near the mushroom stuff and pretty much avoids that room entirely.

So there is no use fighting it. Cum out of the closet, everyone already knows that growing shrooms makes you gay

Hmm okay. If I put it in my bedroom it would be towards the corner of the room. The middle of a room would be ideal but unfortunately I don't have an empty room to do it in.

Better than the closet you think? Again, it's not a very tightly packed closet, the fruiting
Chamber will have a little room to breath on the sides and ends of it but obviously won't be as open as in a room

A SFGC's design relies on a rooms natural air currents to function properly. You could probably get away with it in the closet if you must, but it will do better outside of it.

It's not a must that it's in the closet as I'm in no need of hiding it from anyone (parents, roommates, etc...) just can't put it in the middle of my living room or dining room. Il probably do it in my room then. Should I just replace my rooms ceiling light with a 6500k bulb or should I get a lamp for the fruiting chamber?

Both will work but I like a lamp on a timer just in case I'm drunk and forget to turn the lights out at bedtime

Haha good idea. What about the orientation of the light?? I'm guessing directly above but idk
How I would get that with a desk lamp or anything else a regular bulb screws in to. Is it ok to just have a desk lamp pointed at the fruiting chamber even though that would result in one side getting more light?

Nah. Not at all. I painted the walls and ceiling with white latex paint, I think at the time I thought it would keep mold down, I dunno. I also just put a 65000k low energy bulb in the outlet on the ceiling and had a old wooden short dresser I put the sgfc on with 4 jars holding it up. There was probably almost a foot between the walls and the fc.

I also make the perlite kinda wavy, like, make it have hills and valleys and shit for more surfice area, dunno if that works, but mine grew fine, and had the cakes raised on a metal rack type of thing. It was like a wire box upside down. So my shrooms would grow out of all sides of the cake, even the bottom.

Lot of grows like that. Would mist and fan REALLY good before I went to work and before I went to bed, and just every few hours when I was home. A pin would be a huge shroom in a day or two. Never got the mean green cept on the third or fourth flush.

Oh! And I always left the light on durring the day and off at night so nobody would see the light and be like "what's in there? Derp"
