Is this a good idea?

I decided to use a humidifier to bring up the rh, because the air is really dry around here lately and even with a SFC I'm only around 75-80% humidity.
In hindsight I should've made the holes smaller.
So good idea or no?

The humidity in a sgfc is from air passing threw the perlite evaporating water of off it. Looks like you need more holes A sgfc is 1/4 inch holes every 2 " on all 6 sides and 4 inches of perlite

You could probably get away with just running the humidifier in your room, but you probably aren't hurting anything. I agree with the above regarding putting more holes in your SGFC, though. If it's really dry where you are, you might have to put your shotgun in the bathtub and hose it down with cool water from the shower every couple days.

Looks like you did the SGFC wrong. As said above 1/4" holes in a 2 inch grid on all six sides. 4-6 inches of perlite. This should give you 90+ RH even in a dry house. Use the humidifier somewhere else in the room if you must but not attached to the SGFC put it in the opposite corner of the room. Also whatever tool you're using to measure RH, your hygrometer is probably garbage. The only good ones to use are calibrated cigar box ones or very expensive compensated ones for meteorologists.

No you don't, you need to follow the tek and build a proper SGFC.
Then you won't need a hygrometer because your humidity would be pretty much perfect.
Just sayin.

I agree with NAH. If the substrate is glistening an hour or two after you mist, you know it's got enough moisture both in the air and in the substrate itself.
