So I'm about to try my first straw log... * 1
    #19070460 - 11/01/13 03:31 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I'm using the "Let's Grow Mushrooms" video as a guide.  I have a few questions...

The water seems to just disappear.  He does the heat pasteurization.  He soaks it in the warm soapy water for a few hours then in the next scene it seems pretty dry.  Definitely not dripping but it's really hard to tell.  He also takes the straw out of a different colored tote than he puts it in initially.  Am I missing a step?  Then he does the next step with the lime @ 150 degrees F, then when he takes it out of there it's dry again.  It seems like way too much water to be absorbed by straw.  What am I missing?  Seems like if I do exactly what he does I'm have completely soaked and dripping straw.  Sorry about the newbieness.  thanks

He showed you 3 different ways to pasteurize. You may be missing the drip dry step. I am using the soap method currently, with which I soak 24hr and drip dry 24hr. The straw is still plenty moist but not even a single drop falls when I pick up a handful out of the poly-mesh clothes bag. With a good squeeze a few drops fall.

1.Straw will stay in the water about 10 hours.
2.You will remove the straw from the lime water.
3.Let the water drain from the straw about 10 hours.

He has two main steps, the soapy soak then the bath with 1 cup of lime per ten gallons.

Chop straw
add soap and hot water
mix
let sit for 2 hours...

"Once your straw has been soaking in the soapy water for a couple of hours you're ready for your pasteurization bath"

add water and lime
Get it to 180 degrees F
add straw from previous step
start bath @ 140
bathe for 60-90 minutes.

Then it just goes into pasteurization.

I'm going to use the method from the video (above) with a 24 hour drip dry. This time but I want to try both of yours next.  Anything else I need to know?  Do I rinse the soap off, temp? What water/lime ratio and temp with the lime soak?

My water was pretty murky.  I don't think this straw was super clean.  Will this mess shit up?

thanks guys

Pasteurization should take care of any competing molds/bacteria/little vermin etc. so even old dirty straw will work but the fresher the better because it provides more food for the mushroom of your choice.

If using heat, pasteurize between 140 and 180 for 60 to 90 minutes. any hotter or longer and it will over pasteurize/pseudo sterilize and any less wont kill off all the competitors.

I usually let my straw drip for 2, 3 or 4 hours, until it isnt dripping anymore and make sure it is under 90 degrees F before you spawn.

if you want to learn more about lime pasteurization check out this thread.

Will it be ok to let it drip for about 16 hours as that's when I'll get back to it. I have it on a screen dripping over a wash tub.  Why does it seem so careless as compared to other methods?  Like just grabbing it with your hands vs being insanely sterile with bleach, gloves and a hood.

it would still definately be better to use gloves when handeling pasteurised straw.
also, i think spreading it out so it can cool fast after pasteurisation is important.
but why pasteurised straw or sawdust is less prone to contaminating (aside from containing not much Nitrogen, is because you leave micro-organisms alive, ones that you want to keep, because they help the fungi degrade the substrate. so becausse the substrate is already partially inhabited, migrading micro-organisms have more difficulty to take a foothold.

Hmmmm, it seemed to start at a great rate and slowed waaaaay down after just beginning.  Almost to a stand still.  The whole log should be covered by now right?  (9 days)  I'd say it's barely %5  :-(

I have never had full colonization in 9 days. All depends on GE and temperature at colonization. Just leave it, I never look before 15 days and even then it will be at 90%.
Be patient with this hobby, most the time you just screw things up by trying to speed things up.

Thanks,

I haven't touched it.  I just got excited when it started so fast then did nothing for so long.  I think it's a little bit cooler than it should be too.

Nope.  Turns out it was colder than I thought and I didn't really use enough rye berries.  All's good now.  Next time I'll post a grow log or two.
