Fruiting from brf jars
    #19121283 - 11/11/13 03:39 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys, I have 8 brf/verm jars that have in a fruiting chamber; I've wrapped the colonized jars in foil to restrict light to the top of the cakes but today when I unwrapped one of the jars for inspection I noticed pinning all over the cake, including the bottom of the jar. Is this normal when fruiting from the jar? Will these shrooms die? I was under the assumption that restricting light to the top of the cake would result in fruits only at the top? should i take them out of the jars? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think its best to take the cakes out of the jars and put it in a SGFC, (shotgun fruiting chamber). Don't see why yould would want fruits only at top

The reason I wanted fruits at the top is because I'm fruiting from the jars; Obviously I wouldn't want fruits poking out of the sides where they have nowhere to go. I followed the improved PF Tek from Psilocybin: Mushroom handbook, Easy indoor and outdoor cultivation. This tek explicitly states to restrict light to the top of the jar by wrapping the jars in foil or opaque paper while in the Fruiting chamber. Is it safe to remove the cakes from the jars and leave them set in the fruiting chamber? I don't have a means of creating humidity; misting the cakes in the jars periodically discards the need for a humidifier, perlite, etc.. My fruiting chamber is made from the shotgun specs if that helps any.

Yep, fruiting n the jar will diminish your yield, but not everyone needs yield!

I'm not surprised you have pins all over - fresh air is the primary pinning trigger, and is probably travelling in the gaps between the cake and the jar.

If you want to fruit in the jar, I would recommend using a small casing layer, roughly 1cm of vermiculite does the trick. I find this dramatically reduces side pinning, and makes it much easier to harvest.

Thanks for the tip. Any ideas on what I should do at this stage, though? Things are growing so there must be something I can do, yeah? Should I just leave them in the jar and let them flush a few times? I'm mostly concerned that the pinners on the sides will die and rot and cause issues within the jar,

Can I remove them from the jars and mist them periodically? Do I need to run out and get perlite and finish them that way? From what I gather, at this stage, they grow quite rapidly. I feel as though I don't have much time.

I'm not trying to hide it from anyone, I'm simply trying to save these jars because they are starting to fruit and I'm not exaclty sure how to go about that at this stage. The cakes are in the jars, they are pinning and I need know whether or not I should leave them, or somehow remove them from the jars. If the the latter is true, how do I safely do this?

Shake it out into your hand. Birthing cakes is pretty straightforward. You might as well give them a dunk, too, then put them into the FC.

Can I dunk while there are mushrooms already growing? Do I need to layer the FC with perlite or can I just set them in my chamber and mist?

Yes go ahead and dunk them with the pins on them, and be careful not to knock them off when rolling in verm. And yes you should definitely use perlite in your FC or else the high humidity won't be maintained like it needs to be. Build a proper SGFC or Poor Man's Pod (search bar at top right of the page).

I have a shotgun chamber so I guess I'll grab some perlite tomorrow, dunk and roll and hope for the best. Thanks for all the help.
