How well is my mycellium spreading? 1st time growing.
    #19121568 - 11/11/13 04:20 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hey folks!

This is my first time growing. I am growing a total of 12 jars... I used one spore syringe for all 12 jars.

I took this pic of the 1st and 12th jar. This is the 6th day since inoculation... All jars look about the same, some have more, some have less.

What are your thoughts?

They look pretty healthy so far, although I'm not sure why you decided to keep the aluminum foil on. Without proper gas exchange you may end up with stalled growth later on, especially with those tall jars. Just keep an eye on it and be patient, good luck

I'd definitely remove the foil, and you can get away with using less spore solution if you want to stretch your dollar.  That looks like moderately good growth for day 12, somewhat above average but not exceptional.

Your good as long as you were sterile during inoculation it should go smoothly dont be afraid to let every spot fill out white before fruiting good work sir.

They look great to me specially for 6 days .  Ide remove the foil while incubating as stated earlier.

I completely misread.  For six days that is pretty exceptional growth.

Awesome.

Thanks a lot! Won't it contaminate if I open to remove the foil? A friend who taught me told me to keep the foil on. I inoculated through the foil, I thought it needed to be there until the jars get fully colonized!

Is the foil above or below the lid?

Below. Jar - Foil - Sealing lid - lid.

It was done this way:

- After preparing the jars, I placed the foil, then the sealing lid and then the big lid. It went into 90 minutes of sterilization.

- I removed both lids, but not the foil. Placed a sponge soaked in alcohol above the foil and inoculated through the sponge and through the aluminum foil.

- Placed the sealing lid on the sponge, removed the sponge so the sealing lid becomes sterilized and covered the jar, then placed the big lid.

Oh, okay.  Yeah, definitely don't remove that foil.  If you continue to do PF tek in the future, a better idea would be to include a dry vermiculite layer that goes all the way to the top of the jar and touches the sealing lid.  You can inoculate through four holes poked into the edge of the lid with a finishing nail and you won't have to worry about alcohol or any of that crap, and the aluminum foil that you put on during sterilization can be removed for more gas exchange and a faster growth rate.  Does that make sense?

Yup, totally!

You rock  For the next growth I will do that instead

Thanks a lot for the tips  Probably my next post will come when it is time to do the cakes... since avoiding cobweb is the next challenge hehe.

Don't stress about cobweb!  It's actually really hard to get cobweb.  Trich or penicillium, on the other hand, are everywhere and will almost definitely what kills your cakes in the end (though hopefully after at least three great flushes).

Once you've got your jars colonized you're just about home free.

Flushing is something I need to know when and how to do it.

As I know that when the jars are fully colonized and upon waiting an extra week for consolidation, it is time to make the cakes, fruit them and then they start to pin.

When and how it is the best time to flush?

A flush is a crop of pins.  When you fruit them the first group of pins that arrives is called the first flush, and then right around the harvest time (or just after) you'll see another flush come in.

Did you mean dunking, maybe? If so, as soon as you take them out of the jars go ahead and put them in water for a 24h soak. And it's good to have something on top of it so it presses down and forces water to go in the cake.

Yup, I did not forget that part

Then, when pins are out and stop ground, rinse and repeat the dunking and rolling.

How many harvests I can get out of the same cakes (so, pretty much, how many times I can repeat dunk-roll-harvest after 1st grow>

You won't need to roll in vermiculite another time, just dunk it.  And really that depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the genetics of your cakes, but very seldom do you get less than two flushes out of a healthy, well-maintained cake.  Often you'll keep getting tiny flushes of one to three mushrooms for a month or so.
