Wbs wet after colonization
    #19111233 - 11/09/13 05:17 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I have some jars that are 100% colonized but look...wet, I can flip the jar upside down and it will slip to the opening, now I am thinking this is bacteria but not sure completely.

I am still pretty new to this hobby but not quite sure what I should do with these jars, any help?

If your just going to spawn then your good to go just smell it when you open it. I would not use it for g2g though.

I'm not going to waste time and energy into something that might not be, i'm trying to learn what this is so later on down the road I know what it is and what causes it.

Looks like you overfilled the jar. You need to leave some empty space to be able to shake it up properly.

It's right at the neck of the jar, I haven't had any issues yet

Oh I thought you were worried because you couldn't shake the grains apart, which can be a sign of bacteria or being overly wet. The metabolites alone aren't necessarily an indication of contamination.

Looks a little starchy to me on the bottom. I was having this problem when I first started with WBS. The last bits of WBS at the bottom of my strainer would always be a little darker than the rest and starchy/gooey (presumably because it wasn't drying properly) -- this is the part that always took forever to colonize. I'd switch to a WBS brand without cracked corn, like Pennington's, and also make sure the outer surface of the seed feels dry and not sticky before PCing.

As for spawning, the jar doesn't look contaminated to me but it also doesn't look 100% colonized. My jars are completely white when I spawn them -- even when using WBS with cracked corn. Give em a few more days. Also, they should only be 3/4 full.

Oh i've been using wbs for about 2 years now, just never experienced anything like this, I decided to go ahead and spawn it to my tubs and it smelled alright.

I guess we will see what happens in a couple weeks!

I'll try to, have 5 out of my 8 tubs going right now and are about 15% colonized so far after 3 days. Still waiting on the rest of my jars to play catch up to get more going. I'm running out of room!
