Never realized how easy it was to force a lock
    #19120651 - 11/11/13 01:34 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I locked myself out of my house so I looked it up on google and there is a wikihow for how to bust a lock with a credit card and it worked like a charm. Made me realize that I need to start using my deadbolt lock though....  :huxleyfacepalm: this is not an encouragement to pick other peoples' locks, this is just an fyi so you dont necessarily have to pay a locksmith next time you get locked out if you dont have a complex lock

edit: btw would be thieves my deadbolt is locked my from now on so if you happen to know my address somehow my house will be locked for real

Never done the credit card method, but bump keys and traditional lock picking are also very easy to do. Security is mostly an illusion.

i could easily pick ur deadbolt in about a minute. i would get a sound alarm to scare off thieves.

Yeah, well in the 60 second delay you give the alarm before going off (you know, so you can come home and disarm it), I'll find your master control panel in the bedroom closet and cut the wire going to the siren. Or better yet if you get a wireless alarm I'll just find the self contained unit and stomp it into oblivion.

That's why I have a mul-t-lock hercular deadbolt with the mt5 keyway on my door.  The door is reinforced with a wraparound and the frame is reinforced with a 48" jamb jacket.  The strike that the deadbolt slides into is a hardened enclosed unit that is mortised/pocketed into the frame(then obviously, the jamb jacket over top) and at the back of it, is then screwed into the 2x4s with 4" screws.

I have locking hinge pins on my door hinges as well as replacing the small ass screws that usual are present, with 3 or 4" screws.

The hardware on my door has stood up to a police battering ram.  They couldn't get in.

i also have security film on all my ground level windows making it a lot tougher to break in.

That being said...some time with a hole saw would get you in my door, but it would be noisy and my neighbours would definitely be like "wtf?".  And IF and when you finally get in...my monitored alarm would go off anyway.

The locks and hardware slow them down and the alarm speeds them up

The bottom line?  Be more secure then your neighbour.

Simple, I wouldn't be dumb enough to break in while you are home! :happyweed:

Masked knows the game, that's a pretty good setup for the main entry. How's your garage setup though? Can I bypass your fancy door locks by spamming the generic garage-door opener frequencies? Any protection on the inner garage door?

I don't have a garage door.  And my backdoor, the one out of sight, is even MORE beefed up.

I was a locksmith for 4 years by the way

Bumpkeying IS that easy.  It's seriously something my 9 year old can do

Thanks.  Yeah, I lay low most of the time.  I'm the in the chess thread mainly.

But since I'm very passionate about the world of locks and locksmithing, I always usually chime in eventually

:highfive:

That's pretty darn good then, well done. If I were a burglar I would definitely skip your house and move on to zZZz's house, where by the sounds of it I could find at least one gun to hawk.
