UK Liberty Cap ID please
    #19119887 - 11/11/13 10:48 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:

Found these in an urban park in London, specifically a landscaped area in soil. They tended to be in the middle of this patch of plants, often growing near certain plants as can be seen in the photos.

Gills:

Light brown in the young ones, brown in the mature ones. They are not attached, free.

Stem:

White pearlescent color, tending to be very lightly caramel in the longer ones. Tend to split apart easily.

Cap:

Caps tend to be caramel in color to dark brown in the bigger caps. Conical, with only a few having a very small nipple at the top. They are quite fragile and can easily become detached from the stem when pressure is applied.

Those are Psathyrella. While species in that genus are very often mistaken for Psilocybe, that is the wrong habitat for P. semilanceata in any event.

One way you will learn to know that genus is that they are very delicate.

Other petite, very fragile teresrial mushrooms sometimes mistaken, but with black instead of purple and/or brown spores are the smaller coprinoid muhsrooms. It will help you out to learn to recognize them a bit too.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
