Cheesy-feet smell coming from jar box...

Ok so I just noticed that my jar box has this very pungent cheesy-feet smell coming from it. I did some searching around the forums and it says it could be a contam.
The cake looks normal, healthy, but with the tiniest bit of metabolites at the bottom of the jar, about 1/4 of an inch long. I decided that I didnt want to just throw away the cake, so I kind of cheated and quickly opened up the jar to smell the cake. The cake smelled normal, beautiful earthy awesomeness. But the lid, dear god, it just smelled terrible. The vermiculite on top of the cake fell away a bit and everything was normal, no contamination. So at this point I dont know what to do.
I feel like I should wait, and birth the cake and do its first dunk. If the first dunk's water smells like the contam, i should probably toss the cake. Does this sound like a good idea?

You could try removing any areas that appear to be contaminated, and use the rest of the cake as you normally would. If there are metabolites, there is most likely bacteria. Fully colonized mycelium are quite resistant to contamination.
Be careful though!

But its just coming from the lid, there is a weird color on the top where the inoculation holes are. Its reddish? And I almost feel like swapping lids. Its almost done colonizing, about a quarter sized spot left to go. Maybe its rust that just smells plain terrible? hehe

Maybe sterilise the lid if it smells like that or thoroughly clean it or whatever. Bit concerned about the verm "falling away"? Did you manipulate yr verm barrier? seeing as you have holes in the lid leading to verm barrier taking it off to give a sniff shouldn't make much difference but I believe actually moving the barrier around is gonna give you problems.
PS next time just smell THROUGH the holes
