Polyporous Cluster Giant Identification
    #19119456 - 11/11/13 08:45 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

The Oak is sprouting something which appears similar to Phaeolus schweinitzii, which does not reportedly grow on Oak but rather coniferous trees.

Greenish pores underneath.  There does not seem to be information available on whether P.schweinitzii will fruit from a hardwood.  There are many pine trees in the area across a field from the cluster.  It is positioned roughly 5-6 ft above the ground.  The sample flesh was quite soft and juicy, dark brown, while P.schweinitzii is reportedly tough at this stage.

I have no clue, but I will say that's awesome. Sorry for my worthless contribution, lol.

Beautiful polypore, I wish I knew what it was.  The closest I came up with is Ischnoderma resinosum but I don't believe that's correct.  Can you cut one in half and show it's guts?

You seldom hear this kind of suggestion in some of the other biology hobbies. Birdwatcing for example.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

In all fairness it was the mass collection by science which became the last push for the ivory billed woodpecker extinction (besides the mass deforsting, of course.  But I'm being too serious again.

It will likely form a network with new substrate.

Thank you guys for your interest, and help.  I have two sample chunks taken from two different locations on the cluster in a jar of hardwood sawdust.  Providing it colonizes I will send out an update.

The previous fruiting from 2010 sheds much better light on the underside.

Spores gathered onto swabs.

Mycelium is whitish.  This is after approximately one day.
