monotub question

My spawn is ready to go. getting ready to follow through with Damions 50/50 coir tek. couple of quick questions I have for you pros though first.
1) I'm out of jars . is the bucket and boiling water sufficient enough to prevent contams? (using just coir and verm)
2) How do you know when the tub is completely "colonized" and ready to fruit? just wait till its 100% COVERED in mycelium?
thanks guys.

1: The bucket tek is ok, but it is not true pasteurization.
It should be fine for just coir and verm.
2: Yes, 100% covered in white mycellium.
Usually takes 7-14 days.

sweet thanks man. I couldn't find any pics or posts related to a colonized tub before fruit so I was going off presumption. I really don't want this shit to fail, seems like it's been forever since I've had some fruit!

I was going to say you could vacuum seal the sub and put it in a pot between 155 and 165 for 2 hours, but 2 turkey bags tied really tight with all the air pushed out would work too, and you cannot have it sitting directly on the bottom of the pot

You do not want it to boil because that would kill the microorganisms that help the mycelium grow and fight off contams. That is why you pasteurize sub and do not sterilize it

i actually have 7 quarts of spawn. I know most people use 6 per coir brick but would the extra quart reduce the contam chance?

Not really...the pasteurized substrate is contam resistant.
It would however add more inoculation points, which would help with colonization speeds.
It also adds more nutrients, as grains are high in nutes.

I use 7 quarts per tub, but I do not use bricks of coir, I just have a big bag I take it out of each time.
In the future, or even now if you have a SAB, you could use one jar to knock up 7 or 8 more for the next tub and so on . . .

Liquidglass, when u say u don't use coir bricks, but u have a bag you take it out of each time, did you mean u pre pasteurize ur sub and use as needed? If so, what sub and how long do you keep it? Ever need to bring it back up to field capacity? I asked this before on another thread, the answer was that it was doable, but just want another person to verify anecdotally.

I use this:

One bag does a lot of tubs
And I have a big bag of verm + a bag of steer manure
I use about 3-4 quarts of verm and the same of coir, and about 1-1.5 quarts of manure.
I have to bring it up to field capacity every time and to do that I use the squeeze test. When you give it a decent squeeze it should drip out slowly, and when you squeeze it hard it should trickle slightly. IT is subjective as everyone has different strength in squeezing.

oh cool, never seen that. do u get ur steer manure local or a store/vendor? what ratio spawn/sub do u use? and do u pasteurize any of this or just literally combine all 3 ingredients, hydrate, and mix with spawn?

I use 7 qts of spawn
I get the coir/verm at the hydroponics shop
I get the manure at a local plant nursery
And yes I do pasteurize, in a vacuum sealed bag in a pot at 165-175 for 2 hours

Damions 50/50 tek should work fine for what your trying to do. Most people say that its not true pasteruation but there are some that say it is. My opinion is that the only difference between true pasteruation and the 50/50 tek is that your pouring boiling water into your coir and that water my be sterilizing it for the first 10 or 15 mins until the temps cool down a bit. I use damions tek when using a full brick of coir, and have had good success with it. Good luck.
