West Coast Hunt - Paxillus, Polypore, & more; some ID requests
    #19117961 - 11/10/13 11:17 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Very excited to see these guys this time of year. It's been pretty dry so far this season, and I've been eager to get some of my first major hunts under my belt. Each of these were found alongside some woodchip landscaping lined with birch trees near my local slough.

This one looks like a Paxillus, my best guess is involutus

This was an interesting little guy. Features include a highly inrolled margin when young, decurrent gills, <1cm long stem, and thread-like fibers all about the cap. Slightly viscid when moist.

Never seen something quite like this before. Not your traditional mushroom. More pleated and cup-like, without underlying gills or pores. Slight violet tinge in photo true to real coloration. Some of the 'pins' were more column-like with black 'stems'

And finally this polypore. This is the first of this family I've ever encountered, so I'm not sure where to begin with an ID. It grew solitary on the roots of willow in a front lawn. Very tough in its current state (didn't bother to pick; the tree looked like it was enjoying the company)

1) Paxillus involutus
2) Lactarius pubescens var. betulae
3) http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Thelephora_palmata.html
4) Ganoderma if the pores stain brown when you touch them, Fomitopsis pinicola if not
