All We Perceive said: you are going to have trouble hearing what they are saying. you can generally hear when people are talking but it's going to be next to impossible to hear what they are saying. that's the nature of closed headphones.
That's the beauty of over ear headphones though, if someone needs to talk to you, just take them off then plop them back on, no need to seat them in your ear canal properly. I really can't do open ear because the lab is generally silent so I think open back headphones would be a distraction for people.
So far it sounds like the M50s are winning me over. I really need to just make a trip out to B&H in Manhattan and listen to some of the higher end headphones there.
While we're at it, anyone wanna recommend me a miniamp? The preamp on my phone is shit.

For what purpose and application do you feel you need a headphone amplifier? Integrated phone amps on devices, both home hifi and portable units are typically sufficient, and if you want an amp for more volume, then you're approaching lifelong hearing damage territory.
I have a headphone amp which allows me to have multiple headphones connected simultaneously for audio monitoring, but for one single user application,I don't know if there's any justification in owning one.
EDIT: I suppose impedance matching to headphones may be another reason to own one. Is that where you're going with this thought of wanting a stand alone amp?

ATH-M50 without a question. They are pretty much universally accepted as the best sub-$200 headphone and are also one of the highest rated products I've ever seen on Amazon.
I have some and personally love them. Beyers sound better, are built better, and more comfortable, but you're jumping up to the next price level ($120 vs $250+).

Exactly that, for the purpose of being louder. My phone has exceptionally shitty sound output. I mainly want a pocket amp for when my phone is hooked up to my car. I have to crank the volume to like 65 on my stereo just to hear it at a reasonable volume, where as with radio or CDs it's loud at 40ish.

It makes whatever device you're using sound louder, clearer and brightens the highs and the mids. This would be for my mp3 player not a phone. I was thinking of getting a nifty looking tube amp for my night stand.

Have a look at the Fiio E7.

Murph, my phone is my mp3 player... iPod got stolen a few months ago. I use Winamp
Also, ATH-M50s are ordered! Beauty of Amazon is that if I end up hating them I can return them.

Well I'm sure it would improve the sound on one of those also. I just got done unjamming a button on my stereo tuner so I could hook it up and enjoy some vinyls, after a few records I realized I could hook up my mp3 player through the phono connection with an adapter cable I had on hand.... anyways my point is I don't think I need a headphone amp at all.

just ordered the Audio-Technica ATH-CKS55BK. had lots of good reviews on amazon so I'm hopeful. Done with skullcandys. Pieces of shit are overpriced and mediocre at best, ALWAYS one earbud would die at about 2-3 months of moderately rigorous use. Garbage.

Earbuds were a bad idea anyway. If you're going to get headphones, you want to get over ear headphones. All headphones will damage your hearing if you listen to them too loudly, and everyone listens to them too loudly. Your ears do not have to hurt for them to be damaged. Earbuds are particularly good at damaging your hearing.

i need earbuds though, i wear a helmet when i go skating and they're just better for working out in general
i keep the earbuds volume pretty low and am conscious of damage to my hearing. i appreciate the concern tho.
but for just general listening i completely agree over the ears is better.

It's the inaudible bass frequencies that cause the most damage. Use bass reduced EQ if you want to protect your ears. Tinnitus is no joke, trust me.

I went to a TOOL show in 2006 on Rue + Shrooms. They brought their stadium rig to a little theater in Oakland. It was so loud it literally hurt. My right ear has screeched loudly ever since.

shitty man, that sucks. i'm usually pretty careful with my senses as i work in a metal fab shop so safety is huge. loud noises, uv light, the works. i'm fairly tenacious and safe so i hope i can preserve my health late into life
yeah my dad has always been realllly dorky lookin at big shows. we'd go to festivals or whatever and he'd have on his giant ear muffs.
dweeby, but his hearing is solid. can't really knock him for it

I went to the King Crimson 'Red' Tour concert in 1974. My ears are still ringing from that one.

Just got the ATH-M50s today. The sound is amazing, even without burn in. Also, all those people that complain about them being uncomfortable and getting headaches on Amazon must be exceptional types of pussies. I'm not a small dude, I have a big(er) head, and I find them very comfortable.
