I'm living in a city I hate in the midwest, working at a coffee shop making around 9 an hour, and have a Liberal Arts degree which can't really get me anywhere.
I have around a grand and I want to make it to the west coast where I won't freeze my ass off by just hanging outside and where I don't despise an absurd amount of the population (I've traveled quite a bit, I know)
I'm 23. Should I just hit the road and hope for the best? If worst comes to worse I can retreat back to my parents house but I feel like I'm having a midlife crisis and I'm young.
I'm also sure a lot of you feel the same way. What type of absurd moves have you guys pulled off and how did you do them?

I'd say stay as long as you can tolerate to save up as much money as you can first. But yes, the west coast is in fact the best coast.

As someone a bit older and maybe a bit wiser, I have more regrets on things I didn't do than thing I did. I say go for it.

A lot of companies will let you apply for jobs and then do the interview over the phone.
Get a job lined up BEFORE you leave. make sure you have housing lined up, etc.
You want to be able to make a credible proposition to the company you are applying for

Definitely try yo have some housing lined up, even if it is a room you rent in a house.
I did not have work lined up when I moved, put I put in a full days work applying for jobs every day until I got hired

I'm getting the friendly pat on the back here. Thanks guys. And that is a good idea about lining up a job beforehand.. I have a friend in Boulder, CO and maybe he can help me do so. I also love that town ; )

Yeah I hear boulder is pretty tits, but I also hear it's gotten very expensive to live there. Having a job lined up is a good idea. Time before last when I moved, I did just that. Worked out pretty good, except I had to start my job like the very next day after I got there. This last time, I did not do that and was looking for a job for at least a couple months.

I'm going to save up money and move out west in the spring most likely, but I don't want to go all the way to the coast, maybe colorado or oregon or something.

I drove from texas to california on a whim earlier this year. In total I spent about 2k getting there and back. I did not plan for the trip at all though, I packed and hit the road with my GPS. I stayed in decent hotels (around 120-180 a night). Motel 6s and the like disgust me.
I got a room at a motel 6 one night, the floor was wet, hair in the sink and I noped out of there, decided to just keep driving. Honestly I should have been in a bad accident that night. On the highway nodding in and out of sleep I could not keep my eyes open for more than a few seconds, i don't know how I got so lucky. I'm convinced it wasn't just luck…
Something I didn't do until my last night on the road was sleep in my car, which I should have done more. bring what you need to sleep in your car at least a few nights.
This makes me think of a Steve Jobs quote "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."
If you feel that you need to move do it.
I loved being in california. Everything about it. The people, the roads even (they were so curvy and up and down, they were fun to ride), just the feel of it all. I'll never forget going down that last hill and seeing a huge town before me covered in lights.
Sorry this post is longer than it should be
tl;dr
Move if you want to and if it'll make you happy. But don't go in blindly. Plan. Save money. $1k will not last long, trust me. The gas alone will eat that quickly.
Being that far away from my family also made me realize how much I loved them. And I couldn't have done it without my parents help. Just don't be to eager to leave that you neglect family.
Good luck OP!

wow, looks like we are very similar OP. Midwest, 23, trying to get out west. Although the city I live in now is pretty tits compared to every other city I have lived in.
I have been thinking about doing something similar after I graduate in may. Been saving up and should have a few thousand to take with me if I do. Gonna have to pin point a location or two so I can look for jobs and such.
My buddy from back home has been in CO for the last 4 months and is doing pretty well. Got a decent job working at a ski place and doing what he enjoys. It took him a couple months of scrounging around, but things are looking up for him now.

CA is pretty expensive these days and very overcrowded in many areas, and that state has a ton of problems. It's also - despite it's liberal image - one of the most regulated places in the US.
I lived in southern Ca for 15 years - originally moving there the way you described in your OP, left around '01 and now live in Oregon, near Portland.
I like it a lot better out here than I did in cali. I'd think twice about heading to CA. There's a lot of unhappy people out there, too.
