krikkrew's greenhouse; opinions & input appreciated!
    #19100419 - 11/07/13 12:56 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So, due to some extensive study of techniques and guidelines of proper cultivation, I decided to construct my own greenhouse, in regard to to the beneficial effect of self-regulation, proper FAE, and optimum RH.
I know it's not the best, but this is my first attempt at this kind of setup, so I'm open to your opinions and suggestions.

Here's some highlights of the specifications:
- Overall dimensions: 36"W 20"D 78.75"H
-7800k grow bulb up top
-Kind of a unique double-wrap method for proper seal
-Venting behind my cool-mist stuffed with poly
-Venting up top, also stuffed with poly
-Small fan on low to help distribute cool-mist
-Wire reinforced door for a rigid seal
-Foam seal strips to properly seal the door
-Velcro strips to keep the seal tight
-Outer zippered layer of breathable fabric

Right.
Yes, I believe I have efficient means of FAE. I have numerous finger sized slits about 15" up off the bottom of the GH stuffed with poly and treated with a solution I have for keeping anything that comes in sterile; drawing air from outside.
Also, near the top, I used this method for exhausting.

What do you think?

i would have a fan running in the room for some passive fae, no ned to keep it sterile your subs will fend for themself the important thing is finding the balance of fae/rh, cubews hate stale air and molds thrive in them

I did a very basic test to determine whether or not I was getting adequate FAE.
After setting everything up and laying out where I was going to place everything, getting all my holes cut and whatnot I let everything acclimate for a few hours.
R/H at this point was 85% with just the coolmist.
Temp was 72*F.
What I did was sprayed a bit of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol into the GH and immediately sealed it up.
Came back 15 minutes later, stuck just my nose in, and it was there still, but faint.
Another 15 minutes later the smell had completely dissipated.
R/H remained 85%.
I then added a tray of saturated perlite and put my substrates in.
R/H climbed and is stable at 92%.
So from this i'm concluding that every half-hour I have a complete air exchange using the setup I have now while maintaining adequate humidity.

Thoughts?

sounds like your good to go but once you haved trays in there let them tell you there side of the story lol, you will juust need to keep an ey on them and the misture on the surfface of your subs to tell you what needs adjusting

Cool idea, nice write-up.

I think you're a little too worried about the sterility of your GH. By the time the substrate has fully colonized it is mostly contamination resistant.

Focus your sterility efforts to keeping your humidifier clean, and constantly making sure that base of perlite isn't a breeding ground for contams as well.

Exactly this. Constructing a GH is one thing, and tuning it is a whole 'nother monster. Look forward to dedicating at least a week when you first put your subs in the GH, you'll need to watch them almost constantly because most people make the mistake of accidentally flooding them from excess humidity which settles on top.

The trick is to take advantage of this extra moisture, because you want the top of your cake to pretty much keep a light layer of water droplets, thousands of miniature droplets. The problem is that when too many form, they begin to puddle. Finding that balance is probably the most difficult part of working your GH, and I find your GH settings are also dependent on what's inside the GH at the time. As in more subs in the GH, then I need to increase my settings a little to help accomodate for more surface area.

I use a very similar set-up to Frank's GH, although my ultra-sonic is on a hygrotherm. When I first constructed my GH I tried to make it work with one only an ultrasonic humidifier but my life changed entirely when I got the cool-mist humidifier for FAE. The two work together pretty flawlessly.

I've been meaning to do a GH write-up.. you might have just inspired me to do so.

Yeah, probably so. I've been having problems with green mold in the other fruiting chamber I built and it's effected roughly 30% of my subs. That and the fact that I'm a Tattoo Artist with OCD just trying to cover all my bases and make damn sure, ya know. But good to know.

Thanks. I unintentionally bought some Miracle Grow Perlite crap. It has wood chunks in it, Not entirely perlite, but probably 98%. Anyway, I soaked it all in a 1:10 ratio of bleach and water for 48 hours and then strained and rinsed it thoroughly. Again, probably overkill, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks, I'm gonna have to pick up an ultrasonic humidifier. The coolmist is adequate R/H wise combined with the fan I have in there. 92%, but I only have half the shelving I want to build in there so I figure once that and the other subs are in it's going to struggle.

Thanks for your help and I look forward to reading your write-up.  :headbang:  :blazed:

11/10

Decided to up the capacity of my GH today.
-Added additional lighting.
-Re-organized everything inside and re-routed all my wires.

I've got bulk subs of GT ready to go in within the next few days.
The smaller subs in there right now are B+, still waiting on them to pin.

I'm liking how everything is running so far. The wait for pinning is the worst, though.

And, pictures:

My lights are on a 16/8 Cycle. I have 3 super-high kelvin florescent grow bulbs in there.

As far as the timers for the coolmist go, I've been running it 24/7 and am still having problems with it adequately saturating the air by itself or combined with perlite. So it's on all the time and I mist in there when most of the water evaporates off the walls about every 90 minutes.
So make sure you have a ultrasonic humidifier.
Also an analogue hydrometer. The digital ones are shit for anywhere close to the r/h needed for this, I learned the hard way.

They grow up so fast

These pins were twice as big as any I have ever grown and are continuing to suprise me.

That's an 8"x8" pan.
Some of the stems are over 1/2" so far.

I'm excited.

Yes, they had problems with cracking and humidity, but I think I have all the under wrap now.
