Anyone here know snakes?

Yesterday I was hunting mushrooms when I came across this guy. I was moving through really thick brush and almost stepped on this snake on a rotting log. When we spotted each other, he reared up in an elevated "S", ready to strike.
As I got my camera out, he slithered up a low branch and started working his way up a tree. As I followed him and moved to get a closer picture, he struck at me then just held his mouth open.
After I got all the pictures I wanted, I let him be and he kept climbing up into a tree.

It was between 3 and 4 feet long.
Anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Woah, haha I would flip my shit if I saw that. By the looks of the triangular head and coloring it appears to be some sort of Copperhead. Where you from?

Not gonna lie, I did scream a few times. It was freaky as hell
I'm in Texas, I've looked up native snakes but I cant seem to find a match for this one. It was fatter than the pictures I am seeing of rat(chicken) snakes. The head and eyes look different to me too, but I didnt really get good clear pictures of those features.
It's definitely not a copperhead, I see them pretty regularly
Here is a picture of a copperheard I caught a few weeks ago

It looks like some type of rat snake. Texas rat snake, perhaps? Most snake species come in a wide range of colors.

It appears to be this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantherophis_emoryi The size markings and color fit it as per the picture on top of the link. You can tell it is not venomous from the lack of fangs In Texas it is probably the south end of its range you may never see another unless you go to the area where you saw it. But I would say that is what it is. Go back and catch one and get better picks.

Yeah OP it's definitely not poisonous. It's probably a rat snake as r00t said or a corn snake. 98% sure though it's a rat snake.

Thank you guys for the insight. I am now in agreement that it was probably a rat snake. I dont think it was Pantherophis emoryi though, because it lacks the distinct markings that continue on to the head as you can see in the first two pictures i took.

At first I thought it may be some sort of rat snake but it seems to lack the patterning on the underside.
http://www.snakeeducation.com/snakes/photos/red%20rat%20snake%20and%20belly.jpg
Copperheads also have a similar pattern on their underside. Copperheads also have a rather distinctive two tone pattern that resembles the sharp contrast of fallen leaves. The second snake pictured is a copperhead the first is not.
Perhaps it is a fox snake? The pattern seems most similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_snake
I may be wrong though, its not a species that I am familiar with. One must also remember that the coloring on snakes is often highly variable even within a species.

Man chicken snake varies from location to location Where I live a chicken snake is a Blacksnake or a King snake in the Bahamas it is a Red tailed boa. The mid west it applies to rat snakes and hognose snakes. Point being there is no such thing as a "Chicken Snake" as a species.

first guess: fox snake second guess: some sort of pine snake
hard to tell because coloration varies from individual to individual

Obviously since I live in Australia I would have no idea, but a snake here with those markings and body shape would be a wild Boa. Introduced species and really rare here, but they look very similar.

Agreed, 100% not a copperhead. Copperheads are a very distinctive species. Confusion comes in when people see any brown colored snake and automatically assume its a copperhead or water moccasin. I live in New York, I couldn't count the number of stories I heard as a kid about peoples run ins with water moccasins. Water moccasins are not native to New York.

Me too. Those poor northern water snakes, getting butchered because of human ignorance.
