do crumbled cakes take longer to colonize than seeds

hi guys i was wondering if anyone has had experience with both crumbling cakes and seeds to spawn to substrate and the time it takes to fully colonize the substrate. I'm wondering because i doing my first bulk grow following damion5050 tek, i cut the recipe into a forth and used crumbled brf cakes with a 1:2 ratio. the tek said it should take around 10 days to fully colonize. it been around 15 days and i can see mycelium growth but no where near fully colonized just wondering if it takes longer with crumbled cakes than seeds.

Don't use a top layer and grains are faster

i know rr does but lots of people are finding it more problematic then anything, the theory is that exposed grains will dry out and lie dormant, in things lke gh's trays in a sgfc i can see this but as long as you keep your rh right you won't run into poblems, beads of moisture right across the surface!

Many of us agree with not using a top layer. RR hasn't grown cubes in a while and never in a monotub. Just saying

so should i just move to fruiting conditions? I used the top layer and there is a number of spots where the mycelium is coming through.

Top layer of what? What are you guys talking about? The question wasn't about leaving grains exposed on the surface.
I've long recommended fruiting bulk substrates uncased. RR

We're talking about when you spawn grains to coir. Mix all the grains and coir evenly and not put a top layer coir to cover exposed grains. We've all found that we get much faster colonization times and better results. We know people used to always say use a top but many of us has found it to be problematic in a monotub

Btw I know he was talking about casing cakes. Idk how the hell we got off track talking about spawning grains to coir We are pretty bad about that sometimes

would it be ok to put 1lb bags of rye berry spawn into 1lb bags of 50/50 poo, staw. or would there be to much mycelium and to little substrate? can't find a good answer for this

i'm doing it in a shoe box size dubtub with a sgfc style top if that makes a difference. i have it wrapped in a trash bag to keep co2 levels high. in a incubator chamber that stays around 76-78 degrees F.
