Official Pacific Valleys Actives and Thread, winter 2013-2014 * 1
    #19114807 - 11/10/13 01:00 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

[This thread will cover those of the major valleys between the Sierra Nevada/Cascade Ranges and the Coast Range, where we have so little of the moisture which make the PWN and Bay Area so friendly to our mushroom friends. If this is you, and you are finding actives, Please, join in. We will have this thread each year.]

I was out shopping again and I spotted these:

My, said I, it looks quite dark and cavernous in there.

I approached:

proceeding further, the seasoned explorer saw more forms of life appear:

At the far end of the cavern, a guardian blocked the way:

Knowing the answer to his riddle, I was allowed to pass, and emerged back into the light of the surface-world.

The very cheesy end.

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I'm a little miffed though. I have a 3rd party app which gives me manual focus, better exposure and image correction options and depth of field control, but it kills my battery insanely fast.

I'm working on an external battery-pack/emergency-charger which would render that point moot, when/if I don't mind lugging around an extra 3lb.

I would like to think we can extend this thread to anybody valley-stranded between the sierra nevada/cascade and the coast ranges across the pacific states.

What say you, shroomery? [edit: too late, I did that biz anyway :P]

San Joaquin/Sacramento, Umpqua/Wilamette, etc.

Lots more babies out there too!

Not at all. Most of them are underneath some very low bushes, so I guess they're somewhat protected from the sun/wind. And there is definitely no shortage of irrigation in this spot, it stays wet most of the time.

Only problem is it's a high traffic area, I was trying my best to rush my pictures and not look too long in one spot.

I find since I am taking only pictures that I'm less concerned, but I do still worry that business owners or city crews would try to destroy the colonies if they caught on. It's a shame, but I've seen one university trying to do so in the past, though that university would have to eliminate every last scrap of landscaping to ever be successful. The maintenance worker in that case was shoveling mulch and mushrooms into yard bags like mad, seemingly unaware that the many thousands of pounds of contiguous mulch adjacent would just take up the slack.

For me it's about the hunt, and despite my low level of skill, the photography.

I do eat some of the good edible species I hunt, but even then, it's mostly about getting out with my camera.

great finds you guys! those are huge fruits, truly beautiful. I am so psyched to go hunting, i have been hunting for 7 years and have found little but this rain is giving me a lot of hope despite the fact that all the spawn and butts i planted were replaced with rocks or didn't take due to our lack of moisture..

anyway, i'm up at 2:30 and want to hunt right now! hahaha
