I found more today I believe the mushroom on the top is not active and is panaeolus subbalteatus, these others that are seemingly rare in the pasture I think are Panaeolina castaneifolia, please help me make a positive I.D!

I know the print isn't the best but I only found a few this morning and don't want to smash them, it's very dark black.

All three pics look like Panaeolus acuminatus to me.

Aren't Panaeolina castaneifolia, Panaeolus castaneifolius and Panaeolus olivaceus synonyms, with Panaeolus olivaceus having precedence in any event?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Could be.
Certainly Panaeolus olivaceus gets called all three names, but that does not mean that there is not a real Panaeolina castaneifolia out there. Would be interesting to study the type or see what Gerhardt's monograph says about the issue.

It would be interesting of monographs were better accessible.
Thanks for the response.

Panaeolina castaneifolia is a Panaeolina (With brown roughened spores) and looks like this, I'm personally undecided if its the same as P. foenisecii or not. Gerhardt separates them by the presence or lack of guttules in the spores, with 2 & 4 spored basidia vs. only 4 spored, and the size of the epicutis cells while saying P. castaneifolia deserves more examination. Panaeolus olivaceus = P. castaneifolius.

Since when do we separate species based on the number of oil droplets in a spore?
Who decided that was taxonomically significant, and is he still alive so I can smack him?
Same for epicutis cell size.

No idea, but its pretty common to use oil drops as an identifying feature for cup fungi.

Yes, for cup fungi that totally works. But I have my doubts about using that in gilled fungi.
