Sporangia?
    #19114351 - 11/10/13 11:14 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

A quick biology question.  Gills are covered with spore producing structures called sporangia.  What is the purpose of the gill structure?  In other words, why not just have a cap with the underside covered in sporangia?

Thanks,

Willy

gills enhance the surface area greatly, thus being able to release more spores

i think the tubes on the inside, the entire surface area can release spores (so the long tubes also create a big surface area). and they create a statical electromagnetic tension wich makes the sporangium (here called basidium)repell the spore, and also spores repel each other, so they can fall down the tubes or gills without sticking to the tissue or stay stuck.
the mushroom is called basidiocarp (for basidiomycetes, with gills or polypore), the cells that produce sexual spores are called basidia.

Craterellus cornucopioides is an example of a mushrooms with a smooth hymenium. Forrest is right to refer to the spore producing structures as basidia and not sporangia, as the former produces sexual spores and the later produces asexual spores.

but you also have zygosporangia, wich do produce sexual spores.

Besides just surface area, I think gills would be advantageous in that they allow wind to hit the underside differently at different times, so the sporulation could be spread out over a longer period and in different directions.

ro correct myself: zygosporangia produce sporangia (wich produce sexual spores)
i have to take a test about it in half an hour...
