Fascination with death
    #19114261 - 11/10/13 10:49 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Sometimes I sit and think about how/when I'll die, and a big part of me looks forward to it.

Other times I'll think about how as much as I value the beauty and gift of life, I'm also tired of playing the game. I feel like I've been here long enough. Too long.

However, at the same time I understand if that was true, I would've mastered the game, and I would have no problems waiting it out until the day that freedom comes.
I guess I just feel more comfortable on the other side when I've visited through meditation or OBE's.
I could never commit suicide, out of pride, stubbornness, and my beliefs on what happens to your soul, but I think about it pretty often.

The strangest part of all this is that I'm not sad, I'm not depressed, I'm not angry.

I just long to be on the other side of the curtain.

:aum:

the one that you once longed for in the past chapter. Sorry, I'm just spewing hippie

You know that's actually a good point.
I've thought about that too and debated whether we keep the "grass is always greener" mind state when we transition.
Is it a human thing? Or is it at the core of our existence?

I'd like to believe that when you're on those upper planes, we're able to see through the illusion of wants, but really, I don't know.

I can only remember small fragments when I come back.

I tend to believe the same thing. Nirvana would be absolute fulfillment and contentment, and I believe Nirvana actually exists. I think one's mindset has everything to do with it though. Some people could find happiness in the lower planes of existence, while others could potentially feel discontentment in the higher planes. Attitude is key.

I think it's healthy to ponder such things. I think overcoming the fear of death is one of the more liberating things a person can do. It's one of our biggest attachments- the attachment to life.

There is no soul or supernatural side to it. And there's nothing to master. You don't go anywhere when you die.

it's a lifetime quest, coming to accept death. the human brain can't understand it, it can't comprehend it, all it can do is accept the inevitable. coming to terms with death is extremely liberating and peaceful. it's very hard for the brain to digest (process) something like death, because it means the end of its very existence.  however, it is not hard to accept. all you have to do is make the choice to accept it. and then you will be free.

if u really want to get up close and personal w/ death, here's what you do. you go find a dying person (at the hospital, or wherever), and you meet them, greet them, comfort them, and be sure to be there at the moment of their death.

make it a new hobby. this is what Roshi Joan Halifax does. just go sit with dying people and comfort them in their moment of passing.

if you really want to know death, if you really want to get comfortable with accepting death, this is about the closest you can get

or ayahuasca

Or you could just realize that the world is layered with 3.6 billion years worth of death and every living thing on this planet will be dead in a trillionth of that time. You don't need to try to face death. It's screaming at you constantly non-stop every second from the moment you're conceived.

yes, but usually it's screaming at you from a distance. over the tv, over the computer, etc.

if you want to get up close and personal, then you sit face-to-face with a person while they're about to make the transition

But it is only natural for there to be "the other side" right?  It makes sense that things are in balance, and the opposite side of something isn't nothing.  There are plenty of unexplored metaphysical areas.  Your statements are just as unproven as the idea of a soul.

Living is simply put the process of dying. It's as up close and personal as the vein in your neck.

a lot of people walk through life ignoring death. i know i'm guilty of that. even though it's so there and real, humans have devised very particular ways to avoid thinking about it

it's because we don't have to deal with it in reality. we distract ourselves. we shelter ourselves. we hide death. it's not out in the open in modern society, we try to keep it as far away from the public eye as possible. the only way most people can see a dead person really is by visiting a mortuary or a funeral.

sure it's there, and it's real, and it's obvious. but how often do we witness it? how often do we really come face to face with it?

there was a thread a while back of someone freaking out after witnessing a woman bicyclist get pancaked by a 40 ft truck. you should check it out. it says a lot about how neurotic and agitated people get over the idea.

So as soon as the simplest life form came from just being atoms to being atoms that replicated themselves in a certain organized pattern some kind of ghost entered into them? Or did it happen when our ancestors were stromatolitic bacteria? I don't need proof that something ridiculous doesn't exist.

Yeah. I get you.

I highly recommend the book Denial of Death. It really deals with all this shit. It changed my outlook completely just by spelling out shit that everyone already knows. It's about as good as non-fiction gets. I don't even know why I started up arguing in this thread now. In my own case I see death in everything because death is in everything. Everyday I think about whether I'll die first or my wife. When will my dogs die. I think about the books that I won't have time to read. How it's amazing that anybody gets anything done at all with life being so fucking short.

Your last point is a perfect example of how material science is holding us back as a society.
Absence of proof does not prove that it does not exist.
Currently all we have are theories, and that's all they are.
Scientists today still admit that they know very little about the nature of consciousness and the human experience.

If you stop thinking that everything is already figured out, and look at the world with a truly open mind, you might learn something.

You should be fascinated with life not death, b/c there is so much more to learn, when you think you know it all, you find out you really don't know much.  Life is fucking awesome once you unlock the keys to life, then you can get everything you ever wanted, then would you still be fascinated with death?

I too am fascinated with life.
I don't think I know everything, and in fact know that I know very little.
Death is just as much a part of life as life itself, so why not ponder it?

Wrong.  There's a million other things it could be.

Again. All we have are THEORIES. And only that. On both sides. Nothing is promised. Nothing is guaranteed.
Open your mind and stop believing that we have everything figured out.

The material model still has holes in it.  It makes no case for documented OBE's, NDE's, or telepathy.  Look up the story of the sneaker at the hospital.
What about the fact that at the moment of death with lose weight?

I'm not trying to tell you that 100% all that stuff exists. Personally, my experiences have led me to believe that.
However just the same you should'nt be so sure yourself or you're just cheating yourself man.

Don't be scared.
Let it go.

I disagree my friend.

But to each their own.

All I'm saying is don't deny yourself the possibility of anything.
Our scientific model has been turned upside down many times before, and never would've happened if everyone kept their blinders on.

You sound just as blinded by your opinions as any religious person.

Maybe one of many.
But some people hold on to their materialistic science in the same way.

Yeah. I have a tough standard. You can't just make up any bullshit and sell it to me.

I mean to me life seems like some ridiculous BS from the start so it makes it pretty easy to think there are  other parts of existence which are also ridiculous to some degree.

Fairy tales makes sense to me.  Humans do not.

That is a good point. For anything to exist at all is impossible according to my understanding of the universe. It's an upsetting paradox but I would rather confess that at this point it's incomprehensible to the mind of man than to accept (or even consider) obviously fictitious explanations.

Yeah I hear that.  I'm certainly not ready to listen to anyone else's answers unless they are clever enough to put on a good show for me.

Have fun clinging to your beliefs.
I'll hold into mine loosely while I continue thinking open mindedly about other possibilities.

What's the harm in considering other options?

It's just too rigid

And yes, that is what Harvey Milk said.

:lolsy:

It was getting a little tense in here.

Damn materialists man. So scared of the things we can't explain.

What's so bad about "I don't know"?

Let me try to humble myself a bit and quote something that lends itself more toward your perspective. An exchange between Charles Darwin and his wife

Quote:

"May not the habit in scientific pursuits of believing nothing till it is proved, influence your mind too much in other things which cannot be proved in the same way, & which if true are likely to be above our comprehension."

At the bottom of this letter is a poignant note in Darwin's hand. "When I am dead, know that many times, I have kissed & cryed over this. C. D."

I highly recommend the book Denial of Death. .

Just read preview on Amazon and it's on its way  :dawerp:

Sorta reminded me of Casteneda when he's told the human problem is belief they are immortal.

Great thread
